Bold prediction:

- Grigor will be top 10 at the end of the year

You are channeling Johnny Mac who predicted that for end of last year and it was not even close.
I like Grigor also, but you never forget how imovable the rankings are for many years by now and not only at the very top.
Last year we have had only one single entry and exit in and out of the top 10, Tipsarevic replaced by Wawrinka and that was it. No other movements for 52 weeks. And that is a lot of time.
There are slow shifts, but everything takes time these days.
I hope Grigor makes the top 15, then he will need more stamina IMO to get him further up.

There was a thread a while ago where I had Grigor winning Slams by 2016 and perhaps reaching the top ranking.

I realize how hard it's to get into the top 10 but this is the year where one of the youngster get's in and that's Grigor. 3500 points at the end of the year will secure him that entry and given his competency in all surfaces; I like his chances. As he moves up in the ranking, his matches will become easier for the first two rounds.

I'm also feeling this is the year Ferrer's legs gives up on him.......

Del Potro took one of the weirdest undeserved rises that I can remember.

Good for him by the way!

EDIT: People were questioning why he went to Sidney...between Sidney and AO he made enough points to help him get to #3. Points are points, regardless where they are achieved.

Will he stay there for long though? A ton of points to defend in the next couple of weeks.

He went to Sidney, played the final 2 days before the AO and lost in the second round...Pretty much vindicating people's apprehension regarding that questionable move.

Murray also defending Miami title and Ferrer his final there. Will they do it?

At least he won a title, while both Andy and David failed to do in Doha and Auckland respectively. So you may think his rise is undeserved, but frankly, those in front of him gave up a chunk of points so far this season.
This was going to be expected, as I mentioned at the end of last year, when JM came very close to them by the finish line.

It's still a direct result of Murray's injury. So he had Murray getting injured, then Andy gets back, goes to the QF of a major while DP is unceremoniously dumped out of the 2nd round...and he catapults to number 3 in the world.

I understand how the rankings work. I'm not saying it's preposterous. I'm just saying the way in which it happened makes it hard to be impressed, or to seriously consider him a top 3 player (he's not, sorry).

Yeah it is bizarre for sure especially considering the results. I think Ferrer should be ahead of him too, he has French final and QF's at the rest of them and I'd assume some 500 point wins as well as the Paris final. Not meaning to be a wise guy but DP being top 3 right now makes it look like it's really frickin easy to be top 3!

I did not say he did anything impressive for it. He will have to demonstrate now how he keeps it or not. Now that he is top 4, he may draw similarly difficult QF like playing Roger or Andy in a QF in the next masters. If he will go down as a consequence to those players, so be it.

Well, we are now talking about undeserved #3 in ATP.

My question is when will we reach parity with WTA and talk about undeserved #1
(remember Dinara, JJ, Wozniacki etc etc).

I guess in about 4 years when the the big 4 exits.

Wow…how quickly the mighty are fallen. We waited 3 years for Juan Martín to take his "rightful place" in the top 3-4, and now he gets there, albeit not in the expected way, and we're sneering. :(

Roger dips to #8 with this loss. He defended his points, however both Berdy and Stan gained thus passed him.
He is now officially #2 swiss.

Meh, the loom and gloom about Roger is a bit of a knee-jerk reaction. One day ago, everyone was upbeat with some of his fans predicting a top 3 return. What changed that? Losing to the guy he always lost to?

It was still an encouraging tournament for him, because he played his best tennis in 12 months. Yeah, he wasn't good against Nadal, but last year, Nadal was the least of his worries. He was losing to far worse players. At least there's improvement there. And beating Murray and Tsonga in the manner in which he did is no joke.

I said it right before the AO and I'll say it now, we'll know Roger's chances in majors come Wimbledon and the US Open, but not before. Wimbledon, in particular, is where he has his best chance, and if the signs he showed at the AO were positive. If he plays like this (more or less) for the duration of the year, he'll be back in the top 4, no doubt.
