Broken_Shoelace said:Anyway, in a few hours, Nadal will get done with Wawrinka and we can mercifully put this debate to rest.
Kieran said:As Rafa himself would say: "Happy for that!"

The return of the king...
kskate2 said:Rafa completely deserves it. It's been quite a phenomenal year and he still has a chance to add a new title to his collection. Congrats to him and all his fans. :celeb:
GameSetAndMath said:As all of us know now, Rafa has clinched #1. What some of you may not know is that
by this he has also established two new, but esoteric, records.
1. He is the first player to clinch YE#1 two times after losing it.
He won it 2008, lost it, got back in 2010, lost it and then has got back again.
Fed and Lendl have clinched YE#1, once after losing it and not twice.
Nobody else was able to do it even once.
2. Rafa is first player to lose #1 and then get it back after two years.
He was #1 in 2010, not in 2011, not in 2012 and got back in 2013.
Even though Fed and Lendl, lost and got back #1, they did it with
a lapse of just 1 year.
I know these are not very exciting records, but they still say something.
It is difficult to lose your mojo and then get back than to keep your mojo
continuously (at least in ATP).

I believe you have left out Jimmy Connors as one of the three to do it like Federer and Lendl as to the first category. As for the second stat, I believe Connors owns that free and clear--he lost the #1 ranking in 1979 and regained it in 1982 after winning both SW19 and the US Open in his comeback. So, he returned to the top of the game after three years had passed. At least, I think I could be right.

Front242 said:Fully deserved year end number 1 for Nadal although I kinda wish it wasn't locked up so soon. Would've imo been much more exciting to see him dead even with Djokovic, with Novak then under extreme pressure to not lose a match, win the WTF and the DC matches. The pressure would've been immense and would've been interesting to see how he handled it.
I actually think Novak may settle down and swing a bit more freely now knowing he's playing for just the title defense here now and nothing more and in doing so, boost his confidence going into the AO.
