Anyway, in a few hours, Nadal will get done with Wawrinka and we can mercifully put this debate to rest.

Rafa completely deserves it. It's been quite a phenomenal year and he still has a chance to add a new title to his collection. Congrats to him and all his fans. :celeb:

Ah congrats to the fans, I love it! I played my part, you know! My car was being tested today and it passed - an absolutely gilt-edged omen which helped Rafa to win today. Also, I've completely banned my missus from watching Rafa in big matches, since she's a proven Jonah.

So yes, I feel I've well earned those heartfelt congrats... :snigger

As all of us know now, Rafa has clinched #1. What some of you may not know is that
by this he has also established two new, but esoteric, records.

1. He is the first player to clinch YE#1 two times after losing it.
He won it 2008, lost it, got back in 2010, lost it and then has got back again.
Fed and Lendl have clinched YE#1, once after losing it and not twice.
Nobody else was able to do it even once.

2. Rafa is first player to lose #1 and then get it back after two years.
He was #1 in 2010, not in 2011, not in 2012 and got back in 2013.
Even though Fed and Lendl, lost and got back #1, they did it with
a lapse of just 1 year.

I know these are not very exciting records, but they still say something.
It is difficult to lose your mojo and then get back than to keep your mojo
continuously (at least in ATP).

I believe you have left out Jimmy Connors as one of the three to do it like Federer and Lendl as to the first category. As for the second stat, I believe Connors owns that free and clear--he lost the #1 ranking in 1979 and regained it in 1982 after winning both SW19 and the US Open in his comeback. So, he returned to the top of the game after three years had passed. At least, I think I could be right.

No, I am talking about ye #1 and not just getting to #1 at some time during the year.

No, Connors was no1 earlier in season..McEnroe was year end no1 in 1982.

I take your guys word for it, but it is mighty hard to see how McEnroe ended up world #1 not winning a major that year and not even making the final of what was then the "Big Two"--Wimbledon and New York--when he had not only made the final, but won both of them the year before in 1981. The math would make it seem unbelievable he could end up on top, but I guess that is what happened. I know that most would say 1982 was the return of Connors to the top of the game.

Hi Shawn,

GSM has it right. Here's a table which makes it easy to follow all of the players and years:

folk often say McEnroe should not have been no1 but tennis was a mess back then, were 2 tours for a start, wct and atp..some tourneys had rank points some didn't, but fact is the listings on atp say mac was no1.

Yes, tented, they have it right, but did you look at statistics for 1982? Connors won 7 events, including 2 majors (one over Mac). McEnroe won only 5 events all year and no majors (although he reached one major final and lost to Jimbo). Wow! I can't conceive how it that result would obtain. I would have thought John might have won 8 events and made a bunch of finals and Jimmy won only 4 events with 2 slams and then did nothing else the rest of the year, but it seems to be the reverse. Strange.

1977 and 1978 Jimbo got top spot and only won a single slam between both seasons - the 1978 US Open final against Borg. I didn't know Mac benefitted so handily in 1982 either. It's anomalous but it happens, a quirk of the system...

What's still to be decided?

#3?

And Rogers final placing? Could affect his seeding in the Oz Open, though he's always going to be a potential qf opponent to the top two. But could he slip out of the top 8 if he doesn't retain all his points from last season?

Fully deserved year end number 1 for Nadal although I kinda wish it wasn't locked up so soon. Would've imo been much more exciting to see him dead even with Djokovic, with Novak then under extreme pressure to not lose a match, win the WTF and the DC matches. The pressure would've been immense and would've been interesting to see how he handled it.

I actually think Novak may settle down and swing a bit more freely now knowing he's playing for just the title defense here now and nothing more and in doing so, boost his confidence going into the AO.

I think it would have been more fun to keep Nadal and his fans in agony for a little while longer knowing that it was no longer in their hands :snigger but it was a long shot anyway.
