We have reached a point where #1 Scenario is now very simple (as Nadal
won today against Ferrer).

One more win by Nadal clinches YE #1 for Nadal.

If Nadal does not win one more match, one match loss by Djokovic
either here at WTF or at DC also clinches YE #1 for Nadal.

So, the ONLY SCNEARIO under which Djokovic can become YE#1 is
if Nadal loses all matches for the rest of the year and Djokovic wins all
matches for the rest of the year.

As always, thanks for the updates, GSM. They're greatly appreciated.

What do you think the chances are of Novak becoming No. 1?

I would easily win multibillion dollar powerball lottery instead of winning on a bet
of Novak becoming YE#1.

If Ralf had an embolism and couldn't play another match, he'd still deserve to be #1 this year. He won 2 of the 3 slams he played and tied Novak's record of 5 Masters. They should give him the award now.

Nah, they let Ferrer play for the FO title this year too. It might have been a given, but Nadal still had to play the final.

Just like now: You have to earn the YE no 1 spot by accumulating the most points in the season. It's not a beauty contest.

Not to worry though for the Nadal fans: he'll get it. Berdych will not trouble him too much I suspect.

That's the spirit, Denisovich! It's not done until the matches are won. We might argue who the "best" player of this year was…that's subjective. But the rankings are a numbers game, and if Novak wrestles the #1 ranking away from Rafa, he'll deserve it.

It'd be funny if Nadal managed to lose to both Wawrinka and Berdych (two guys he's a combined 29013582936283490626-3 against) to lose the number 1 ranking.

That's not subjective at all! 2 slams and 5 MS titles mean Rafa is clearly the best player this year...

Nope. That's subjective. Objective is what has been agreed to by those who set the rules.

Well let me put it to you this way, I'd objectively take a year like this for Rafa again next year, and subjectively speaking, you probably wish Novak had Rafa's results this year... ;)

I really don't understand these debates... Everyone agrees that Nadal has been the best player this year, regardless of rankings. So objective, subjective, who cares? We're all in agreement here... At least I hope so.

Unless someone wants to make a case for Novak being the best player this year...

It's the same as saying that Novak was the better player this year at the semis at RG. Hence, he should have gotten the FO title.

What matters is getting the result on the basis of the agreed rules. Nadal won RG because he won three sets out of five against Novak.

If Nadal would get the year end no 1 trophy despite having accumilated less points than Novak that would be, quite frankly, stupid. Novak deserves it if he gets the points.

This will be moot anyway in a couple of hours.

Denisovich,

If Novak ends the year #1, and Rafa #2, would you happily accept the same results next year too? One slam for Nole, and 2 for Rafa? 5 MS titles for Rafa?

But the #1 ranking for Nole?

What on earth does that have to do with anything.

I'm asking you, do you prefer Rafa's results this year to Novak's. Would be happy if they both had the same next year.

Why? We are talking about whether Rafa should get the year end no 1 trophy despite potentially having accumulated less points throughout the year.

No, we're talking about who had the best year.

If Nole ends the year #1, you believe he's had the best year. So would you gladly take the same result next year?

Or would you prefer that Nole has results like Rafa got this season?

Maybe you should learn have to read. Oh wait, no, you know how to read. I'm pretty sure you read the [#243] post of this thread. So what is it you are trying to do?

No we are not. We are talking about who gets the YE no 1.

Go back to Moxie's post about the best player being subjective, etc. We have been discussing who's the best player this year since then. Broken then asked if anyone wanted to make a case for Novak being the best player.

Now, I don't mind the odd show of pedantics, but I think most players would take Rafa's results this year ahead of Nole's, regardless of who ends up #1.

Today, hopefully, it'll be a closed book... ;)

So let me get this straight. You want Rafa to have the results he had this year AND the YE no 1 despite the fact that he accumulated less points this year. So we play by the rules if it is beneficial to Rafa, but if it isn't you want him to get the trophies nonetheless.

Fantastic. Maybe if Rafa loses to Novak at the AO final, Novak should give him the trophy too, because he just played 'better'.
