Nadal needs 306 points more to clinch YE no1. In other words, two more wins.

More info after reaching the semis at Bercy.

Cheers. Yeah, thought it was 2 wins alright.

To summarize: if Nadal wins two matches, its a done deal. Nadal gets ye no 1. If Nadal wins one match, Novak needs to win everything (not sure if two live rubbers are necessary then though). If Nadal loses all his matches, there is a little bit of space left for Novak, but I haven't done those calculations.

Btw, Novak does not get no 1 ranking next week, since the WTF results of last year expire tomorrow.... :cry

Nadal's current lead over Djokovic is 1420. Djokovic can get a maximum of 1500 in
WTF and an additional 225 in DC for a possible total of 1725.

1. If Nadal wins two matches, it is a done deal. Nadal is YE#1.

2. If Nadal wins one match, Djokovic needs to win WTF and two live rubbers at DC Finals
to become YE #1. If he does anything less, then Nadal is YE#1.

3. If Nadal wins zero matches, Djokovic can become YE #1 by just winning WTF.
He does not need to win even a single match at DC. Also, if he does not win
WTF, he will not be #1 no matter what happens in DC.

Thanks, GS&M! It's quite exciting to have something decided - maybe - in the round robin matches...

Just remember that whenever I am mentioning about Djokovic winning WTF,
I am actually talking about him winning WTF without losing a single match.
Recall that due to Round Robin Format, it is possible to win WTF without winning
all the matches one plays.

In particular, if Nadal wins 1 match and Djokovic loses 1 match, it is again
done deal in Nadal's favor, even if Djokovic goes on to win WTF and DC.

A special shout out to GSM and Denisovich for all of their help in sorting out the intricacies of the ranking system. Between a close race for year-end No. 1, and the unusual ways of accruing points in the WTF and Davis Cup, this has become a pretty complex topic.

I'm not sure I understand, but will be using these crib sheets to follow along during the week. Thanks, all. :basiate

Nadal has set this up flawlessly to make it the most heartbreaking rankings moment for Djokovic ever! Djokovic will be glued to the tv screen as Nadal plays those round robin matches. Priceless!

^ I can be a rah-rah fan, but I've got nothing on you. This is historically Rafa's slimmest part of the year, and with good reason. Indoor HCs is not his best. I'm hoping for good results, too, but I don't see any reason to be irritatingly arrogant at this stage.

^ What am I rah-rahing about? Nadal hasn't wrapped up the #1 ranking. Other Nadal fans wanted Nadal to wrap it up earlier. Whereas I want whats best for tennis. What we have here is the perfect scenario. It would have been boring if Nadal won Shanghai or Paris. The World Tour Finals are far more entertaining due to the closeness of the rankings. Its great for tennis.

I agree it's really unlucky for Novak but to be fair he benefited from the same rule this monday exactly one year ago when Roger skipped Paris where he was defending champ and then was deducted all of his 1500 points from his unbeaten WTF run in 2011 and thus he lost (among others) 2500 points at once on the monday the WTF started and dropped from 12315 to 9465 within a single week.

That way Novak not only regained the top spot and got another week at the top before the YEC started but was also guaranteed to finish the year as #1 even if he had gone on to lose all of his WTF matches. No wonder he went through the motions against Querrey in Bercy. This year it was him on the unlucky receiving end of this rule. That's how the cookie crumbles sometimes.

Anyway, Djokovic fans shouldn't feel sad, this autumn he built a great foundation to regain the top spot next summer and it's definitely admirable in the truest sense of the word how he responded to the disappointments in Paris, Wimbledon and New York. To be honest I feared he would suffer a free fall until the AO but he proved us all wrong. The guy is a true champion.

Very good point. I am one of the happy Novak fans, because for me, the race for # 1 for this year was a done deal a long time ago. The USO sealed it for me and ever since Nole started his winning campaign in Beijing, I am a happy camper. Is no point living in the past.

It will be fascinating next year after the US Open when Djokovic will have China, Shanghai and Paris to defend. I say this because the general belief is that Federer will improve next year. So if Federer lives up to that popular belief, then Shanghai and Paris will be particularly intriguing battles.

Well put, herios.

As a Rafa fan, the No. 1 ranking isn't that important to me. He spent many years as No. 2, unable to break through Federer, while also accruing dozens of titles. If anything, his not being ranked No. 1 feels more like the norm. In fact, most of his Majors have been won while he was not ranked No. 1. (Only 4 out of 13 when he was.)

The way I see it, if the No. 1 ranking is achieved, it's the by-product of success, so it's nice, but it isn't essential.

On the other hand, I can understand how Roger and his fans have placed more importance on it because of his chasing history with the records for consecutive and cumulative weeks at No. 1. Neither of those records will ever be realistic for Rafa to surpass, so there's no point in obsessing over them.
