Anybody saw this match?
Unfortunately, I didn't see it, but I am curious. Maybe someone will post it on YouTube.
he has to be hampered by a bad back general.
he has too much game still to be losing like this. he won a slam in 2012.
General Hercules, this is pretty much it. He hasn't made a big deal about it and used it as an excuse, but admitted recently that his back has been hurting him and has been trying to play his way out of it. He said he almost withdrew in Gstaad, but his home crowd welcomed him so wonderfully, he felt good enough to try to play.
Not to mention he is still trying to adjust with the new racquet and he has been trying different combinations of weights/strings to get the proper balance.
But the back is probably what is holding him back the most, and it has especially affected his serve, and ability to hit ground shots with consistent power, especially to the forehand side. He has only been averaging 180 km (112mph) or less on first serve, which is close to 20 km slower than his normal pace and about 145 km ( 90mph) on second serve which is also well below average. Add to this a lack of confidence from these factors and a return that is sub-par, and it's quite enough to cause him problems at this level.
He's hopeful that the summer heat in the Americas will help him on the hard courts. But if it continues to bother him, I don't give him much chance there since the serve is even more important on hard than clay.
It is what it is. Others have suffered from back problems and it has led to earlier retirement. Federer has eventually managed these problems in the past (since 2002), but it probably is more difficult now as he turns 32 in 13 days.
Respectfully,
