Nestor Reaches 900 Match Wins

Winston-Salem, U.S.A.

21.08.2013

Nestor, Paes© FRED MULLANE / CAMERAWORK USA, INC.Daniel Nestor records his 900th doubles win.

Daniel Nestor became the first doubles player to reach the 900 match wins milestone, as he teamed up with fellow 40 year old Leander Paes for a 6-4, 6-4 win over Paul Hanley and John Peers on Wednesday night in the Winston-Salem Open quarter-finals.

“It’s obviously special being able to play as long as I have and fortunately winning a lot,” said the Canadian. “I always had great partners, and it’s nice to share this moment with another great player in doubles over the years. It’s a special evening.”

Nestor, who made his ATP World Tour debut as a 16 year old, has compiled a 900-358 match record and 80 titles over his illustrious career. He notched his first win in 1993 in Auckland, alongside Sebastien Lareau.

Four players have reached the milestone in singles action: Jimmy Connors (1253), Ivan Lendl (1071), Guillermo Vilas (929) and Roger Federer (910).

http://www.sportinglife.com/tennis/news/article/553/8883608/murray-ready-for-new-experience

The Scot was on Thursday back at the scene of his first grand slam triumph as the draw was made for this year's tournament, which begins at Flushing Meadows next Monday.

Murray arrived in New York last Friday and cannot wait for his first match, which will pit him against 33-year-old French serve-volleyer Michael Llodra.

Murray is the holder of two of the four grand slams having added the Wimbledon title to his collection last month, but defending one will be something new.

The 26-year-old said: "It's obviously tough, it's a new experience for me.

"This week has been a bit busier than normal, there's been a few more demands on my time. I'm looking forward to it. I want the tournament to get started now."

A calendar year in which he has broken his grand-slam duck and ended Britain's long wait for a Wimbledon men's singles champion has certainly lifted the weight from his shoulders, but expectations are higher than ever.

Murray was typically self-deprecating as he chatted alongside defending women's champion Serena Williams after the draw.

When his list of achievements was reeled off, the Scot joked that it sounded more like one of Williams' years.

He was then asked about his popularity in Britain compared to newborn Prince George - almost certainly not for the last time given America's love for the royal family - and laughed as he insisted the future king was much more important.

Murray has been enjoying post-Wimbledon life, though, saying: "It's been nice.

"The first week it didn't quite feel real. It's something I've been working towards for a long time. There was a lot of pressure, and not just on me but the people before me like Tim Henman.

"I've enjoyed my tennis the last few weeks, but now it's time for business. This is a huge tournament for me. I love this tournament and I'll try to have a good run."

Murray's first week looks relatively comfortable, with Llodra, who he has beaten in all three previous meetings, followed by either Victor Hanescu of Romania or Argentina's Leonardo Mayer, while Juan Monaco, Andreas Seppi and Nicolas Almagro are the seeds standing in his path to the quarter-finals.

A potential last-eight encounter against fifth seed Tomas Berdych, who beat Murray in Cincinnati last week, will certainly not be easy while the Scot was drawn in the same half as top seed Novak Djokovic.

The pair have met in three of the last four grand slam finals, with Murray winning here and at Wimbledon and Djokovic prevailing at the Australian Open, but they can only clash in the semi-finals this time.

In-form Spaniard Rafael Nadal is on the other side of the draw so could meet Murray in the final.

Andy Murray: US Open champion 'mentally better' - Pete Sampras
By David McDaid
BBC Scotland Comments (68)
Andy Murray will cope well with his unfamiliar role as defending champion at the US Open, according to 14-time Grand Slam winner Pete Sampras.

Murray won his first major in New York last year, and returns to Flushing Meadows later this month as Wimbledon champion too.

"I think it's a little bit different when you're the man to beat, but you get used to that," said Sampras.

"I think mentally he's a bit better now."

Murray beat Novak Djokovic in five sets to win last year's US Open, added Olympic gold with a straight-sets victory over Roger Federer at London 2012 and won Wimbledon last month with another triumph over Djokovic.

Sampras, 41, added: "Now he feels like he belongs, like he's up there with Roger Federer, up there with Rafa Nadal. He's on his way to doing great things."

folks I can't see nole getting past del potro in the quarter finals.

he has a tough draw.

I had a feeling this was going to happen.

Their battle at Wimbledon, was one of the best matches played this year. Both guys like this surface a lot better than the grass. I can see Nole having a tough day in this one. If he gets through (and I think he can), it won't get any easier in the next match.

this match--- nole vs del potro--- might happen.

del potro will take some confidence and comfort to the match knowing that he was able to defeat nole at indian wells.

and del potro is a positive dude anyway. and he is mentally strong.

I know the experts are picking nole but I don't think he makes the final this time.

potential road blocks exist for nole at the quarterfinals and at the semis.

All is well General Hercules. Have had family visiting this past week...

Interesting draw. Here is my first glance call. I will post a more thorough draw analysis if I have time.

Sample Projected paths for top 4 (nf - non-factor for them):

(When I separate the players by slashes, it means I believe they have a fair chance and could beat the others in their grouping)

Novak Djokovic - nf, nf, Dimitrov, nf, Del Potro, Murray/Berdych/Wawrinka, Nadal/Federer

Novak has a bit of a challenge in Dimitrov early, if they make it that far, but Dimitrov hasn't shown much stamina in best of 3 , let alone best of 5, but Grigor has a chance if he can blitz in 3. But Nole's first big test will be Del Potro, as long as Juan gets past Rusty Hewitt and Tommy Haas. If Del Potro is healthy and gets that far, I think Juan Martin can beat Nole. About 50-50.

Andy Murray - nf, nf, nf, Almagro, Berdych/Wawrinka, Del Potro/Djokovic, Nadal/Federer

Andy has a pretty easy draw, all the way to the QF. Only Almagro has a chance before that, and not a big one. But then it could get tough for Andy, as Berdych or Wawrinka would loom before him. And if he should get past them, either Del Potro or Djokovic would await in the semis.

David Ferrer - nf, nf, Gulbis, Janowicz, Gasquet/Raonic, Nadal/Federer, Murray/Berdych/Del Potro/Djokovic

David Ferrer has not been in the best form recently, but who knows? Gulbis might have a chance, but Ferrer handled him easily in their only meeting. A Janowicz rematch of their Paris final would be interesting. Janowicz was exhausted by the time he got to Ferrer in the final there, playing his 8th match in 9 days. I think Janowicz could beat Ferrer this time in the 4th round. But if not, Ferrer will probably make it to the semis where either Nadal or Federer will be ready to pounce on Ferrer.

Rafael Nadal - nf, nf, Davydenko, Isner, Federer, nf, nf/nf/Del Potro/Djokovic

Nadal has an easy first couple of rounds, but the third could be tricky depending on the health and energy of Davydenko. Kolya has only lost once to Nadal on hard courts in 7 matches and Kolya leads their H2H 6-5. And that loss on hard courts was their first match in 2006. The other 4 wins by Nadal were on clay. They last played in 2012 in Madrid on the blue clay. The last hc match was in Doha in 2011, where Nadal lost 3 and 2. If Nadal gets past Davydenko, he could have to deal with John Isner again in the 4th round, and we saw how close that was on the high bouncing courts this year of Cincinnati. Should Nadal get past Isner, Federer will probably be there in the QF, as I don't see anyone who should be beating him before that; though this year, I guess anything is possible.

Nadal and Federer have never met at the US Open, even though Federer has 5 USO titles and a final to his credit, and Nadal 1 USO title and a final to his. It would be an interesting battle. Nadal certainly is riding high, and has definitely been the best player during 2013 so far, despite missing the AO and exiting early at Wimbledon. Their last match in Cincinnati was closer than it appeared, and in Cincinnati, the bounce was higher this year than in the past as many players mentioned.

The bounce makes all the difference in matches between these two. Nadal wins close to 100% when the bounce is higher, and Federer nearly 100% when the bounce is lower. Fortunately for Nadal, the trend overall on tour in the last few years favors higher bouncing surfaces, and they have mostly met on higher bouncing surfaces and he has won at a rate of 2 in 3 matches. How will it be in New York on Arthur Ashe at night? Arthur Ashe has been slowed over the past 3 years. Weather could also play a factor. Still, they both have to make the semis for this to play out.

Note there is an extra day off between the Semi and Final this year as the Final will be played on Monday.

To sum up, I think each of the top 4 have a fair chance of being beaten before the semifinal. Djokovic, Murray, and Nadal will have real tests in their QFs. And Ferrer could be gone before that.

Respectfully,
masterclass

top flight analysis as usual general masterclass.

keep it coming.

its all about the return of serve and generally being healthy for nadal. especially on the quicker/faster courts where he does not have the time he needs to fully execute his strokes. his movement tends to be sticky too on hard courts.

that being said, he can be in any match against anyone if he can just return well.

he is starting to return well again. lets see if he can keep it up.

and now he has a few matches under his belt as well so that helps his cause.

roger still has major game so he is not going anywhere. he is going to make some noise if the back holds up.
