It has been acknowledged that athletes are regarded as idols by people (even more than singers and/or actors) and since the athletes are used as endorsers when a scandal takes place the companies that selected them to represent their image they would have to make a decision as to drop or support the athlete. My study tries to understand which corporate response would generate a favourable reaction from the consumers :).

Why so, particularly?

I am trying to understand which corporate response (Nike dropping Maria or supporting her) would generate a positive reaction from the consumers :)

What's the background? Are you seeing if Nike's brand has been damaged by the story.

Nike's a pretty strong brand. Just in tennis, they also have Federer, Nadal and Serena Williams, so that's a lot of fans. They've also stood behind athletes like Lance Armstrong, so it would be ugly for them to drop a woman. I should think they'd do better sticking by her, for now, than dropping her publicly. She's becoming a non-entity in tennis. Whenever she comes back, and maybe doesn't have a swoosh on her clothes, that's how Nike will drop her. Quietly and unceremoniously. The larger question, for tennis, is how, or if, she ever comes back. She's not even being spoken of. It's as if she never existed.

Nike dropped Armstrong though... and they'd probably be better off dropping Sharapova. She's damaged goods... I can't really see how they'd incorporate her into brand marketing. Not a big fan of Nike, always preferred Adidas in any event.

They will drop her, if they haven't. Just doing it quietly. They didn't drop Armstrong right away. I like Nikes...I run in them. Also, consistently excellent advertising. But don't you think Maria has really dropped off the map of late? Mention was made that she wasn't going to the Olympics, but I haven't really heard her name uttered while watching tennis since about Wimbledon.

On what grounds is she appealing? Looks like an open and shut case to me. She made a titanic blunder when she tried to wrestle the narrative away from the media and admitted taking the stuff after the deadline. Ignorance isn't usually a defence.

They haven't dropped Gatlin. As things stand I'm done with Nike, not buying their stuff anymore. They don't seem to care about ethics in sports

As opposed to TUEs being used to legally dope. Oops, forgot, both were taking banned substances. Easy mistake though :popcorn

The only difference between the Williams sisters and Sharapova is one was taking something that wasn't banned for 10 years and therefore legal and forgot to/intentionally and stupidly didn't list it once it actually became banned and the others were taking banned substances but asked nice and politely, please Dr. Stuart Miller is it ok if we cheat by taking banned substances to help us win tournaments? To which he gladly said, why sure, go ahead and make me rich and it's good that you at least asked if you could unlike that dizzy cow Sharapova.

the sisters are not the only ones using TUEs ...lots of players do it because its the proper way to use medicine in sports.Serena and Venus used the dosage that was approved by WADA and ITF...pova was self medicating.Venus only used this out of competition when she was struggling with Sjogren really bad and Serena has a bad knee that everyone knows bothers her a lot...anti inflammatories thats it..

I realize this but you're always going on and on about the Williams sisters innocence while slagging Sharapova. Now just so you know, I can't stand Sharapova, but the Williams sisters really aren't a whole lot better and it's time you saw this for what it is. Sharapova was taking the drug legally for 10 years and it's already been documented that what Serena was taking burns fat, builds muscle and adds power and Venus has an inhaler on the court ffs. Hardly out of competition and dodgy as hell as is ANY player, for the record, who has an inhaler 'cos most of us aren't buying that lame excuse when we see a player take a few puffs and turn into a super hero on stage annihilating their opponent 6-0 or 6-1, eg Kvitova.
