Genie is trying to emulate Maria in more than one way. Rumors are that she is dating Grigor now. :hug

Bouchard and Dimi make a gorgeous couple. She is a big step up from Pova, but doesn't he feel sheepish having to see his ex-girlfriends at work?

Don't forget Bouchard is emulating Pova in another way. Hogstedt is her coach. If she continues to play the way she has since January, Pova's endorsement money could be shunted to Bouchard, and she could be a distant memory by the time she returns to tour.

Maria has already admitted she did wrong, so there'll be no "deal". She has nothing to bargain with, to make a deal. She failed the test, and accepted the result. All she can do is plead for clemency, based upon "ignorance." I don't see how this stands any chance of holding up.

She'll get 18 months to 2 years...

Since WADA already stated that a one year ban is appropriate punishment, this is the maximum. ITF might go with 9 months, hoping WADA does not challenge the verdict. In any case, playing in the Olympics seems nearly impossible, which is probably the biggest disappointment for her.

There is one more issue with Olympics. If so many athletes from other sports are going to be banned from participating in Olympics, it would be a huge double standard if they let Maria play there just because ITF thinks she is cute.

This is a big deal. I believe she took the risk which was a mistake in itself. :nono A professional athlete of her caliber knew the risk. She deserves a 2 year ban minimum. Really surprised that she would put her career and endorsements in jeopardy like that. Her decision to take this drug reeks of desperation.

"Desperation" = addiction ?

Welcome to the Frontier. Her initial decision to take this drug in 2006 shows desperation. An 18 year old healthy athlete doesn't have all the medical problems she eluded to in her press conference. She was looking for an edge and this drug gave her one. She showed even more desperation by continuing to take it well over a decade when it went from the watched list to the banned list. Addicted. Yeah, I'm sure she was that too at some point during the 10 years.

Well, Dominatrix admitted taking the drug for 10 years. That does not mean she took it only for 10 years starting from 2006. For all you know, she may be taking it from even before.

The reason that she admitted to taking it for 10 years is that her old samples can be tested any times. However, the statue of limitation expires for any sample collected before 10 years and so they cannot be tested again.

she better start thinking about going Hollywood.....I think she started during the hardcourt season of 2006.I remember mentioning that her eyes were glassy during the final with Henin and was banned from several tennis boards...she took something from a brown bottle during her match against Henin..it was disturbing that she could do that infront of the whole world...she knew they would never suspect her...
who is having the last laugh..

That would have to have been the Meldonium or something else that was allowed or undetectable, because she would have been tested after that final.

Meldonium was not on the banned list at that time..she was the media darling and was considered the IT girl by Larry Scott and Stacy..she was protected.

I had looked at some photos of Maria and sometimes her pupils look a bit on the large side.

It's not disturbing to drink/take dodgy things in the public eye. There's a lot of it going on actually but a blind eye is turned by the cowardly authorities all the time.

None of us know what either of those is but no one is really bothering to check either.

But if she was/is addicted to Meldonium, it could enable a plea of diminished responsibility due to dependency. She would have to go to rehab and might get sympathy as she could not help herself, she could claim.

Yeah, I'm addicted to steroids, HGH and EPO as well. Oops, I forgot they're banned too. Don't think that would go down too well really.

It could be anything in that! Literally anything. The player's team shouldn't be allowed to do that.

3 athletes who tested positive for Meldonium said that they stopped taking it after taking notice of the 22nd December notification of its new illegal status, but still tested positive and the manufacturers have said that some traces of the drug can remain in the body for up to 3 months. If they have evidence for this and are believed, these 3 athletes could effectively be exonerated and a case could be made that all tests in the period after 22nd December for up to 3 months afterwards should be scrapped, as no allowance was made for clearance out of the system.

If so, Maria's test could be expunged, except she has already confessed in the press conference that she missed the 22nd December notification and continued to take Meldonium in ignorance; she also confessed to having taken it for 10 years prior to that.

So, if her confession was unnecessary, was that press conference a big mistake ? Should she have kept quiet and wait to see what happened ? She might have shot herself in the foot.

She and her team should have known it had a long half life so they should've stopped taking it well before December. This drug has been on the watch list over a year now. There's no excusing her or her team's actions. A healthy 18 year old doesn't have heart problems, diabetes or any of the crap she lied about. She was using it for an edge for years and deserves to be punished accordingly. Doubt she will be but she should be.

But she can only be punished for using it after it was banned, and can only get the maximum ban of 4 years if it can be proved she used it after the date it was banned knowing it was a performance-enhancing drug without a medical justification for its use.

The players team giving the player anything food or drink related during a match is a form of cheating imo. The player should prepare better and not rely on his coaching team to help him during the macth.

It might offer a better explanation of why she was caught, but doesn't fully absolve her in my view. I'm not convinced this was being taken for non-PED reasons
I think she admitted to taking the drug during the AO2016. She just said she didn't know it was banned as of 2016.
