Huffington Post blogger spins it the other way (and makes it believable too to some extent).
Now, this may turn out to be a mother of all fights. Because, they are no longer simply saying, please let Maria go off as it is a honest mistake etc. They are saying WADA is being vicious in getting her.
Everybody, get your popcorn in whole sale. We may need it for the next three months. :popcorn

No where in his blog does he address why a world class athlete is taking medication for ailments she "could" have and why had she been taking it for 10 years. These are two important questions in my opinion.

I know the author of the article is being sarcastic at times, but surely WADA are right to need more money? I mean, I don't know how far €30m dollars goes in terms of chasing, testing, maintaining labs and staff, flights and the whole lot, but it can't be even close to what they need. I often wonder why pro sports don't have an automatic % that comes out of athletes winnings to go into a fund that pays a decent pension to the old black & white heroes who made all these juggernauts popular.

And then another % can go to drug testing agencies, to police the sports. Maybe it does already, but it doesn't seem like it's even near to being enough...

When she returns from the ban, what will her ranking be? I can picture her rejoining the tour early next year. By then, she will have no ranking points. She would have to rely on wild cards. Is that correct? What happened to Troiki?

Good question. I think the suspension will just mean she's absent from the tour and will lose all ranking points between the start and the end of the ban, and have to work her way back up the ladder, relying on the goodwill of tourney directors for wild cards to get her into the main draw...

I've heard that her ban will be reduced to one week if she appears on Oprah's coach... :snicker

Nice write-up by Forbes blogger . Even a year punishment for Maria is nothing, considering she has already amassed $260 million by doping. Argues that punishment should be a % of money amassed by indulging in doping.

Well considering the drug was only made illegal in January, that wouldn't amount to much, by her standards...

Yes, in this particular case, it was illegal only from Jan 1st. But, imagine a situation where somebody becomes famous and amasses a lot of wealth by doping and succeeding for 10 years and then one day they are exposed and serve say couple of year ban. Those two years ban will be nothing as without doping they would not have been able to amass so much wealth in the first place.

I agree. I actually think it's time they broadened the punishment and started to treat long term drug cheating as fraud and theft, and give prison sentences. Why not? That's what it is. They're not only stealing from sponsors, but they're cheating fans and their fellow competitors. It would be the ultimate deterrent, but it would also be proper justice. A two-year suspension is derisory...

I don't fancy my taxes being spent to imprison sports dopers, but I like the civil suit approach.

There's that too, and I believe huge sums of money have been recouped from Lance Armstrong by sponsors etc, but I definitely think the current bans - while they're shaming players and removing them from their careers - are far too short and obviously not enough of a deterrent...

Well on the bright side maybe now if Maria gets a decent enough ban the other players can catch up to her number of losses to Serena.

not really surprised at the stance taken by the WTA leadership. They have to protect their prized asset after all
