If Rafa would play like against Dimitrov....yep, it could be potential :-(

DIMITROV continuest o show he is a little ove-rhyped --

very talented yes -- but players of HIS generation are around that are just as capable...

CASE IN POINT the little-celebrated VASEK POSPISIL who made dimitrov look PEDESTRIAN.

TODAY -- vasek showed POWER, precision, movement , court positioning, and even sampras-like touch...and when i say THAT about a ''touch player" -- as a BIG SAMPRAS FAN previously --

i i know whati'm talking about.

Good win for Troicki. Rafa didn't play as horribly as he has in the recent past, but his performance was a bit lackluster. One of the best matches I've seen Victor play in a while.

I thought very similarly. Perhaps the only thing Rafa lacks a lot comparing to his golden years is lack of aura which was helping him a lot in similar matches in past.

YUP -- PEOPLE haven't given enough credit to VIKTOR'S game in defeating nadal -- or others for that matter.

often it is - as is usual with the 'lesser names" -- ''due to the dip in form" of the big names, be they nadal, nole, federer, andy, or others.

but there ARE guys -- one of them is troicki -- who , although 'inconsistent' in career -- HAVE the big , INTELLIGENT game to defeat anyone.

of course we know the most successful careers are always a combination of sheer talent, concentration, a certain ''killer instinct" - etc..and a capacity for CONSISTENCY in finding a way to win ..

but hey -- it is important to give credit to when a player actually wins based on what he did RIGHT than what the other guy did WRONG.

Sorry but I don't think Troicki can beat anyone serving well. This time It wasn't because his serve (yes, it was good with 11 aces) but how bad and Rafa is playing. His FH worked horrible, his serve too and his head even worse

My commentators bag to disagree. Like me, they didn't see anything too bad in Rafa's game. Did you watch the match at all?

Translated from PuntoDeBreak:

Rafa Nadal suffered a heavy defeat in his premiere in Shanghai. The Spaniard, who had a great opportunity to stamp his ticket to London at the Chinese Masters 1000, went to the press conference with a speech full of resignation, suggesting that the desire to compete in 2016 has shut down or was close to doing so. Rafa was very hesitant with the competitive short term.

There were many statements and arguments that resonated strongly in the press room of the tournament. Nadal did not want to hide any feeling and was very hurt by the defeat, the game and his current feelings. "I need to talk to my team and my uncle. Sometimes the solution is to train. Stop, go through a training process, and perhaps this is an opportunity to do so.".

"For me the season is almost over, and I accept it. I'm not sure about the things I have to do to try to be 100% next year. I can not say now what I will do during the next month "

--------------
He has lost time, unnecessary matches, aura and confidence.
His forehand lacks power to finish points, his return doesn't hurt.
He got outworked today, took 4 points on Troicki's serve in the first set, didn't break at all in the match.

He should have reached this decision after the US Open.
Let us see what happens.

Respectfully,
masterclass

I've seen half match and I've read and talked with people which have seen the whole match and their opinion have been 'Rafa was off, just playing a little better he would have won that match, he needs time off to recovery his mind"

I agree, Mastoor. That lack of aura is hurting him big time right now. It's becoming very obvious that he goes in and out of matches so players don't have to fear the dreaded comeback that Rafa was well known for. Still, it's been an up and down year with unexpected surprises and injuries so he's done the best he could at this moment. Those stop and starts have to wreak havoc on a player's confidence.

Still a fan.

I found it was a very ordinary effort from Rafa, something we're not used to seeing. It was like he was trying to muster up some care, but befuddled at the same time as to what was going wrong. I don't think he played that bad, it just lacked any passion until the end. He mustered up a little towards the end, but it was too little too late, IMO.

I think this is true too. The match was winnable, but I think Rafa was really struggling with confidence. I'm sure the loss to Dmitrov who he had previously beat in all of their encounters spooked him. I think he knew that Troicki could play him well and feared that it might happen again. He wasn't free to hit out; he was being too careful and it cost him.

this is also part of it. after all it does take TWO players to a game..

but troicki played smartly. in many instances he didn't wait to let rafa get into a point enough and grabbed the chances he built to finish off points quickly - and it seems that this presented a real problem for Rafael..the court played somewhat fast i thought and it was exactly good for Viktor's approach yesterday. and that's what it means to be smarter in a game..

but it's also true that on the whole this HAS been a very, very bad season for rafael -- practically almost two years now really -- and THAT can take the 'bite' out of his shots...and that's enough to render anyone vulnerable, i think.

but still this was a good enough RAFA that against many other players he still could have launched a win.

Troicki - however - IS a very, very good player - and let us remember HE was the HERO when SERBIA Took its Davis cup. ..showing a player not only with GAME but one who CAN endure and play well under pressure on a given day.

and this day was one of these.

a lot of it is the dynamics -- when they meet in their careers, what the present circumstances are, how a formerly ''dominated player' learns how to read the other player much better. etc..
