cilic out so faker's only threat to the final is also gone so he has a virtual bye to the final
In the current form, Cilic was not going to be a threat to Novak anyway. So his elimination is kind of non event as far as Novak is concerned.

To the extent he's ever a threat to Novak, what's wrong with his "current form?" He seems pretty much Cilic as usual to me...up and down.

That is what I meant. He is now in a "down" period.

I take that point, but it's just tennis, and my understanding is that the Asian players enjoy a lot of support across the pan-Asian community. It's not like there are loads of Asian stars in tennis, but I could be wrong about that. However, I didn't find the Chinese as prejudiced against the Japanese as the reverse, in my own experience.
Japanese and Chinese do not see eye to eye, even on a personal level. The same is true for Japanese and Koreans. Having lived briefly in Japan, I noticed that Chinese and Koreans, like other foreigners, face discrimination in Japan. The reverse is also true in Korea and China. A few years ago there was a fracas in China, during which many cars of Japanese make were targeted by mobs. Some Asian countries are still bitter towards the Japanese because Japan brutally occupied them early in the 20th century.

People don't realize how different the country's are over there with longstanding animus towards one another going back decades in the Orient; esp. with Korea & Japan! What's interesting is they're probably more racist than any hillbilly living here in the States! They are very educated people in Japan, but some of the actions purported to go on is shocking! Supposedly if not Japanese, you can own a company there, but can't sit on the Board! It's been years, but the last I heard there were only 3 honorary citizenships in Japan; no one else need apply! The attacks/sexual assaults of Japanese soldiers during their occupation will always have daggers going back and forth between them and Korea! Mixed Japanese people are shunned and pretty much treated like Black people here in the USA; a true lack of overall respect! It's made worse most have to agree that they are a lot more intelligent, but hold onto some traits of ignorance & bigotry!

I'm trying to watch it now with Cilic in full control vs this kid and his weird service motion! HITF did Cilic lose this match? :nono: :banghead:
I watched most of this match and for most of the first 2 sets looked like Cilic will win routinely.
However, when serving for the match, Cilic blinked and Jarry showed a lot of resilience. That happened twice in both the second and the third, being a break up.
Kudos for Nicolas who did not give up and came back from the brink to win it.
Jarry has a big serve, but he also came up with some awesome winners at key points in the end of set 2 and 3.

Jarry started making his move early though still falling behind! There was this great lob over Cilic's head he allowed to play him other than the other way around along with some penetrating groundies that hurt Marin!  :yesyes: :ptennis:

Djokovic said in his presser that the court plays the fastest he has ever experienced.

I honestly get all of that, and I know that the Japanese can be specifically racist and exclusionary, but there is also such a thing as rallying for region. There are very few Asian tennis superstars. Li Na has apparently set off a craze for tennis is China. And Kei is the 3rd highest paid player in men's tennis. While Japan is a wealthy country, I have a hard time believing that his appeal is limited to his home country, and we know he's not wildly popular in N. Am. or Europe. He's the first man from Asia to make a Major final. Personally, I think that most people eschew history, and back a neighbor, when it comes to sports. Of course I could be wrong...old animosities die hard. But sports do tend to bring people together.

Are we really sure Roger will get by Medvedev tomorrow/tonight? I wouldn't put any $$ on it! The end might be near!
Good question. Medvedev is on a roll, but he had not played someone of Roger caliber. Probably the better server might prevail on the day.

I think Medvedev will give him a hard time. Roger could have used an easier first round to come back after a month, and with Medvedev feeling his oats. Still, it would be a surprise, if not a shock, to see the upset.

I'm going to be interested to see who comes out of Tsitsipas v. Khachanov and Basilashvili v. A. Zverev, in particular.

Like I said before, if Roger loses to a coco puff at this tournament it's time to call it a season. Already wasted energy with that worthless Laver Cup. He needs to gear up for #21 at the very least next year. Keep the animals at bay

And you have said it before, um, a few times. Is it going to be better if he loses to Djokovic?

Hoping Medvedev is feeling tired. Otherwise, Fed will have a tough match.

Djokovic is a great player, but in a way it would be worse for the resume, it just wouldn't be a pathetic loss. Losing to anyone but him with this tour is a pathetic loss unless it's Nadal on clay. Also, I never said losing a final is the same as losing a first round match. I've just said losing the final doesn't mean you're playing good tennis. The finalist this week went 4-1, finalist of a major went 6-1. Neither gets me hard...
