Here are some other opinions from the NY Times articles;

Excerpts:
“That’s not how it works,” Paul McNamee, the former Australian Open tournament director, said in a post on Twitter after Federer said soon after his late-night victory that he was considering withdrawal. “You’re not at a candy store, able to pick and choose which matches you play, as your actions affect others, and the tournament.”

“I understand it, but I don’t like it,” Patrick McEnroe, an ESPN analyst and former U.S. Davis Cup captain, said of Federer’s withdrawal in a telephone interview. “It devalues the major, and it gives someone in the draw a walkover. It gives arguably an advantage to somebody else. They play one less match.”

He added: “It’s just not a great look to pull out of a tournament in the middle. It’s one thing if you sprain an ankle badly and finish a match on adrenaline. Those things happen. But it’s another thing when you kind of go into a tournament knowing that you probably aren’t going to be able to really finish the tournament. Roger can’t expect that he’s going to play the French Open and not have some physically demanding matches in the first three or four rounds. That’s kind of inevitable. Look, he’s trying to get himself ready to make a run at Wimbledon, which I believe he’s done. And a lot of people say he’s Roger Federer. He can do whatever he wants. He’s earned this right, and I understand that, but I still don’t like it.”

Excerpts:

Hanging on too long has its price! Fed's finally having to pay for his arrogance! Bout time! It was bogus even seeding him so high with such little play under his belt! I suppose the special treatment will continue with him being allowed to play the Olympics while not satisfying requirements! Boy I've really gone 180 on Fed! The resentment is becoming more and more real the longer he hangs around! By the time Connors left, I truly hated his guts! I've always had a problem with players who invariably end up just taking a spot away from a more deserving player! Even Rosewall extended his stay too long and started looking bad; esp. going out early at the USO being played on clay at Forest Hills as #11 seed! :angry-face:

I assume Fed withdrew due to injury. He mentioned his knee. Why the debate?

Tsitsipas with a favourable scheduling here in RG, first a night match with Isner who btw hung in there pretty well in slow conditions and now with Medvedev also night match.

What is the point of these night sessions when there is nobody in audience? They could easily schedule it like before, during the day. I don't understand the reasoning behind this, but if I had to bet I would say it has something to do with money, some broadcasting benefits.

Also is it only me who can't stand the french language? I simply find it annoying and those double language interviews on court and translations it's disgusting. Speak the english for christ sake.

Yeah I'd have Medvedev a heavy favouite in a day match against ShitsHisPants. That said, the h2h is 6-1 to Medvedev who still hasn't forgotten the "bullshit Russian" comment so he'll probably go out of his way to beat him and shut him up anyway.

I know, but I'll be gone by then, far away on a ship doing full ahead.

I am all pumped up for tonight's match though. It has all ingredients to be a really good match. I hope it goes to 5 sets with plenty of drama.

I’m curious how Medvedev who was terrible at FO suddenly starts playing well. Does anyone see what’s he’s doing differently?

My logic is telling Tsitsipas, but I'll be strongly rooting for the russian. I just love his character so much, his sense of humor and the whole personality sits much better with me than the greek.

With regards to tennis there are pros and cons for Medvedev here.

Pros:
He is in greek's head
He has no pressure at all, literally
He has new found belief on clay

Cons:
Night match, slow conditions
Greek improved return of serve
No fans

I just hope Medvedev comes out swinging and finding corners like in match against Garin, serving great and being agressive then everything is possible.

I think the night conditions favor The Young Greek,if it is during the day I would favor Med,I couild be wrong,Med has played day matches when the court has been fast, which he says suits his play,I agree,.....interesting match up,

He likes the conditions first of all, played during day, the balls suit him too as he said.

I think the big difference is the belief too, once he got rolling he now realized: look I have a chance to do well here. So he is trying to play tennis that he usually does, he has been agressive and dictating the play, also defending well and even sliding, serving great and not giving his opponents much chance. Against Garin he finished some service games like it was HC, very quick

I like Medvedev’s personality more than Tsitsi’s. Both would lose to Nadal so I guess it’s moot.

A drive volley at the top of the net Sasha? I don't think so....no wonder it went into the net
Broken...

I assume AZ lost a ton of fans since the news about the abuse of his GF. I’m amazed he plays as well as he does (minus the multiple double faults) given all the drama in his personal life. His forehand looks much improved lately.
