Any tragedy, I think they have done a very good job and a look very up to date. As you can see in this picture it's exactly the way Nadal makes that shot

Roger wouldn't play unless he felt that he could be competitive with all the top.plsyers on the tour.Roger isn't going to loose to a qualifier

Would you really be shocked if he loses to a Qualifier?

This year is different. He's pushing 40 after several surgeries and in 15 months has played a grand total of 3 matches, losing 2. There is an uncertainty hanging over Federer that only playing will answer.

Fair enough, I would be "surprised"if he lost also. However, I specifically used the word "shocked' as in utter disbelief, and that I would reserve if Rafa, Novak, or say Stefanos, lost to a qualifier in the first round.

The big factor is that this is slow red clay, which exposes any of your weaknesses including lack of stamina, match toughness and footwork/mobility. The French Open is the worst Major to play on if you are match rusty.

Fun drinking game; Medvedev got Bublik in the first round, which is a hell of a tough 1st round, Alexander currently ranked# 37 in the world, and last year took out Monfils.

So any predictions, over and under, 3 , 4 goes to 5 sets, Is this is the year Medvedev wins his first French Open Match?? Is the fifth year the charm?

This shows how deep the delusions run that you have to even repeat this commentary! In their opinion this only makes sense for other players, not Roger, THE GOAT! :face-with-hand-over-mouth:

Roland Garos has never been a slow red clay court it is a medium pace red clay court.Hamburg used to be the slowest red clay tournament.

I am off to deliver some newborns into this world.Later.

I would prefer Rafa to meet Novak in a final, where the pressure is on Novak.
I'm going to say that this is a bit of a theory, the notion that you have a better chance of capping Rafa in the SF than the final. (Which, let me point out, has never been proven.) The pressure is still on Novak if they meet in the SFs. He's never beaten any version of Nadal at RG, other than the 2015 one. They would both gear up for that match as if it were a final, should it happen, so I don't really see the difference. They both know it's very likely coming, and will pace themselves for it.

I agree, and that is his gesture. I like it, I think. I'm actually surprised it came before he retires, but I guess it's all getting too silly to wait.

I dont know,I knew it was coming this year,I was surprised I hope it is not a bad omen? Moxie will come down on me like a ton of bricks,I am a bit superstitious,at least he is not wearing that awful colour combination in the tournaments before RG.Rafa is wearing green with black shorts at RG this year.
Why would I come down on you? I'm at least as superstitious as you are. :face-with-tears-of-joy: And I'm not sorry to see the lilac and lavender go by the wayside.

(OK, I hate to say it, but taking out Monfils at this stage is not an indicator, either.) I've made a lot of fun of Medvedev's chances of reaching his ambition of getting out of the first round of RG for the first time. And I can agree that Bublik is not an ideal first round. But all joking aside, Medvedev needs to decide if he's going to be Safin, or if he's going to be a real top 5 player. It's kind of funny to make sport of your own crappy clay results, and insist that you hate the surface, but I think, if he wants to be taken seriously, he should fight for his life for that first round. And for the quarterfinals, for that matter. He stepped in shit in that bottom half draw, in the sense of lucky. Get over yourself and fight for it. And a note here: he's not even the petulant, erratic Safin yet. At least Marat has 2 Majors. Medvedev needs to get over himself, a bit.

No No give the statue to him now and let all who dare challenge him know that there's a reminder of just how lethal of a competitor Raphael is.

Moxie I get your point but the only things he have in common with Safin is his height and they're both are Russian..

Safin was like Galactus , the destroyer of worlds. Safin was the perfect warrior and didn't have one flaw in his tennis game. Yes he wasn't Always committed to every tournament but when he tuned in, he was the TRUTH.

Go back and watch his first encounter vs Sampras at the US Open..Roger and Leyton at AO..The semi finals vs Roger was easily one of the greatest display of tennis talent EVER.

When Novak was on the rise, Safin gave him one of the best grass court tennis lessons at SW19 I think maybe in round of 16 or qtrs..

I disagree with you...another thing they have in common is the bh. And the temperament. The 3 matches that you mention are (at least 2 of them,) the best performances of his career. (Hewitt was a pick-off.) I was a huge Safin fan...he brought me back to tennis. You can't tell me how great he could be, that I don't know. But we can also talk about how much he got in his own way. And that's what I'm saying about Medvedev right now. He can choose to fight hard, and stop trying to get in his own way. Even if he loses, I want him to show he cares. And even if clay will never be his surface, if he works hard, maybe he will even accomplish as much as Safin. But at least Marat proved he was a world-beater before he became an eccentric. Medvedev hasn't earned the right to be that eccentric yet.

Rafa didn't lose in 2009 because he wore a shocking pink shirt, it was because his knees were going and Soderling had a specific bone to pick. And it was cold and rainy. Rafa has won plenty else in pink, and even he's not afraid of it.
