You are just being nice, but thanks all the same.

BTW, this is one of the strangests clay seasons of all time.
I'm not really that nice.

I wonder why you think it was a strange clay season. At the risk of being partisan, I'd say it was because there was no Rafa. Since 2005, he's either dominated it, or been the shadow over it. But curious as to your take.

Up tomorrow:

Jarry v. Ruud: Everyone's Dark Horse/Spoiler v. Overrated??
Dimitrov v. Zverev: Perennially-Overrated v. Self-Overrated?
Rune v. Cerundolo: Two Dangerous ones!
Etcheverry v. Nishioka: WTF??

I have no idea how to pick, but why not?
Jarry, because that would be fun, and Ruud, is a folder; he's got a lot to prove, beyond points to defend, so I'd love to see Ruud step up.
Zverev, because Dimitrov
Rune, because @Jelenafan, and because Cerundolo has no viking war ship imagery
Nishioka, because he's lefty and crafty? I dunno, though...Etcheverry is 6'5" and has the better record on clay. It's a pick 'em. I challenge anyone to tell me they've watch either play during the first week and can tell me how they're doing. :face-with-tears-of-joy:

I have just woken up from my Nana Nap, gee when is the Aussie Summer of Tennis starting again, I have to get up at 7pm and matches go to about 6am next day/ morning depending on if they go 5 sets etc, for Paris, though it is my favorite GS so I will suffer!
Jarry is playing out of his mind at present, though I will pick Ruud
Etcheverry another South American, who is having a good RG
Cerundolo has been my pick for the get go, he is dangerous, though he cant afford to get tight, like he did in the first set against Fritz
Zverev, Dimitrov will fold like a tent :)

My comment did ask for an explanation. Obviously no Nadal adds to it, but the other two immediate suspects (Djokovic and Alcaraz) also didn't get the results people were projecting. Ruud did not get that much either, players would do well in one tournament, fall early in the next, their actual level (not only the results) oscillating from match to match (from the little I've seen). It seemed everyone sensed there was something there for the taking -- and got nervous about it.

That was true up until RG. Now it seems Djokovic and Alcaraz both have taken up a notch. But let´s see how it ends.

I feel like everyone is overrating Cerundolo. Rune has accomplished much more in his career than Cerundolo, and he's 5 years younger. Rune wins this one comfortably in 4 sets. Although, Cerundolo would fit the mold of Gaston Gaudio (who won the French Open the last time Rafa didn't play) as a surprise champion.

I have changed my mind on this match up between Ruud and Jarry, I feel the conditions suit Jarry more, with his power and shot making, Ruud cant afford just to counter punch, this will be a match of contrasts, Jarry did defeat Ruud in Geneva just recently, Jarry went on to win the tournament

Ruud had to save 5 BPs in his first service game, he held finally
Jarry over hitting at present, Jarry is at the wrong end of the court serving with the wind swirling around
Oh well Jarry broken, he needs to watch his margins, dosent have to go for the lines
Ruud 3-0 with the break? can I change my mind and go back to my original pick of Ruud lol! still a long way to go

Yeah I think that Rune is comfortably favourite to reach the final from that end of the draw. The only question is how he handles that prospect..

Good service game to ,love from Jarry at least he is on the board
7th BP for Jarry has to take one
Jarry finally breaks, back on serve in the 1st set, 3 all
Jarry has a great 2 handed BH, also a good bh volley
5 games all, great contrast in styles.

TB for the 1st set between Ruud and Jarry
Jarry making too many UFE on his fh side, 3 to be exact and costly
Ruud with 3 SP 6-3
Ruud 76 (3) 1st set, Jarry made to many UFE early in the TB and never recovered

Jarry with a huge hold from 15-40 due to some great 1st serves, appears in control of the 2nd set so far leads 4-1
Well that was short lived from Jarry too many ufe on his fhand which is his weakest shot and Ruud breaks
Back on serve in the 2nd set 4 games all, Jarry appears to have lost his momentum
Jarry with a Djoko smash at the net and Rudd will serve for the 2nd set 6-5, well done to Ruud was down 1-4 in the 2nd set
Jarry with a BP, Jarry is 2/9 BPs so far in this match, make that 2/10 BPs deuce
Ruud wins the 2nd set 75 and leads 2 sets to love

I haven´t seen that much of Jarry lately, but I have seen him play in person twice, his forehand is huge. If you are saying this, I reckon it must be pretty inconsistent. Normal, as he goes for his shots when he gets half a chance.

This match has been so tight, but Jarry with nothing to show for it. Lost his break advantage here in the 3rd. Still he keeps a great attitude. I just saw this stat on winners: Jarry 53, Ruud 28.

He hits the cover off the ball...and he definitely likes to go for it.

We learned a lot about mats from that match. One being that although he was great and young and precocious, he was no Borg. He did great to win seven slams though, and in common with bjorn, he checked out of the top club too young, although in his case he continued to play. I think his dad became sick, and this affected his game. I know he has a son with a rare condition, so good for Mats, he’s a great daddy as well as being a good son..
