Right, but he wants to know in what order. I can never keep it straight, year to year. The top half of the draw started first, so do they play first on Friday, or is it purely up to the organizers? The top half of the draw would almost certainly have the marquee match, so would they want that up 2nd?
He is difficult isnt he lol! let me go back to the site I was on and see if I can get more info

But do they follow a principle, is the thing? The lower half of the draw will have to be facilitated in terms of rest. If they play first, it’s to give them more time off for the final, or if they play second it gives them more rest from the Q/F. I know they have a system, and the more I’m thinking of it, I think the top half plays second. I know I thought Rafa played first last year but I think it was actually the second match..

Yes, the top half of the draw, those who play on Tuesday, always play first on Friday.

That said, I never liked the idea of men's quarterfinals being played on Tuesday or women's quarterfinals being played on Wednesday. The 2nd week of all slams should be standardized like this:

Middle Sunday - Women's 4th round
Monday - Men's 4th round
Tuesday - Women's quarterfinals
Wednesday - Men's quarterfinals
Thursday - Women's semifinals
Friday - Men's semifinals
Satuday - Women's final
Sunday - Men's final

I actually went back to 2019, because I remembered Rafa/Roger played first on the SF Friday. They were the bottom-half of the draw, which played first that year, so consistent with your point that those who start first play the first semi.

The crowd's taken into consideration over the players! The Majors like to spread these imortant matches over days rather than have a consistent schedule as you proposed! They've been pulling stuff like this as long as I can remember! I recall in '79 BJK playing Evert on a windy Thursday in their SF, while the other w/ Navratilova & Tracy Austin was played on Friday at the USO! :exploding-head::fearful-face::face-with-hand-over-mouth::face-with-tears-of-joy:

Big leap in class for him to face today, he didn’t do too badly..

This is true, for sure. But I indeed overestimated both Varillas and Ofner (my post was about them both). I could try to bullshit you guys, but I cannot bullshit myself... I try hard, but ultimately I find it impossible to overcome personal bias when making tennis analysis/predictions.

Aside from the scheduling, I'd be curious to know if anyone knows how the Majors decide a) which half of the draw starts first? Does it alternate year to year? and b) Is there consistency between which half of the draw starts first and if that same half of the draw always plays the first SF?

I guess, but I can only speak for myself... maybe there are a few out there that can -- even if you always see things through your own eyes -- at least be able to leave emotions aside. As I said, I *really* try hard to gauge it, but it is like trying to build a dam with porous materials... emotions, like water, just find a way through.

Mrzz, I think this is the single greatest admission from a poster, ever. A lot of us try to be somewhat dispassionate, at least in most of our judgements, as to pure tennis, anyway, but I think we have to realize that it's a losing battle. We care enough to participate on a tennis forum. That means we have opinions, and preferences, and they don't all come from a rational place. Sports fandom is about love and passion, which are both, at their core, irrational. Great post.
