So Medvedev wasn't sandbagging after all, when he downplayed his chances here. Wonder if Seybold W. can back up this big win?

Bad luck for Medvedev to have met someone playing so good in the 1st round. Djokovic would have lost in straight sets against such an opponent but his luck is so huge. Rest well Medvedev and enjoy your time with your baby and wife. :smooch:

Med was one of those I mentioned who was muttering “ WHAT THE HELL am I doing playing BO5 on this surface?”

Dang, so far even pistol Pete had a better French Open record in his career than Daniil…

Sampras actually worked at it, but all too often he ran into defending champions or clay court specialist! As much as he owned Agassi, Pete was destroyed the one time they played in Paris back in 1992! It was probably a bit shameful how we anointed him THE GOAT while not even playing a FO Final! :astonished-face: :thinking-face::face-with-hand-over-mouth:

That the kid got talent, it is evident. The problem always was, broadly speaking, mental. If he keeps winning -- either this tournament or this year -- people will start talking about him, and there will be a lot of talking. Anyway, he had (has?) an attitude problem; after he won the Santiago ATP and got inside the top #100, that became clear, and the end result was that he got out of the top 500, if am not mistaken -- top 400 for sure. He started the year in such position, it was a win in a small challenger (75 points) in Coquimbo (Chile), that prompted his rise in the rankings (had some relative success in the tournaments leading to that, some good results after as well). Anyway, those results before the final RG cut allowed him to narrowly enter the qualies.

And here he is now... showing a lot of mental fortitude.

Tennis is fantastic sport. Here I am talking about the issues this kid might have (and that surely had shown in the past). But, at the same time, when I play any completely irrelevant and small club tournament, not even in the internal "A" category, I choke. I giantly choke. And I *still* talk about the mental aspects of a guy who just finished the #2 in the world in Chartrier with a forehand winner. That's internet for you.

I must say the power that Wild gets off his fhand is very impressive, he played 'fearless' tennis at times and in the end it payed off for him.
