Tennis loves its traditions, but the clay tournaments need to realize it's the 21st century, and there is technology to settle these line calls accurately. Even with the mark the ball leaves, we've all seen examples of umps and line judges getting it wrong.
I too have often wondered about it (especially when the umpire comes down and different
people point at different marks). Then I investigated as to why they are not using hawk-eye.
Apparently, it is not due to tradition. The margin of error for hawk-eye system on clay
is much higher (and in particular higher than acceptable threshold) on clay courts in comparison
to hard or grass courts. This is because the ground is not solid (so to speak) and the ball
has a skidding effect on the crushed brick making it difficult for the hawk-eye system to
pin-point the landing place.
