Cilic is a very good bet for year-end #1. The only two guys about whom we can make a better case than his are Federer and Nadal. He is also the better bet for a major win in 2018 outside Fedal. As GSM put, his been in two out of the last three major finals. Gave Federer a run for his money and beat Nadal playing scaringly good tennis. Plus, he already won a major. Actually it is quite obvious.

For the rest of the year, If Roger can win 3/4 masters or a slam and 1/2 masters Roger will have a good shot at YE no. 1. Competition is big so unless Roger doesn't win another slam and someone wins 2/3 of the remaining 3 slams, Roger should have a chance.

I think Cilic could be year-end #1

Not unreasonable. Outside of Fedal who else has a chance with Djokovic/Murray/Stan likely not to accumulate enough points given the deficit they have already

Rotterdam tourney has 4 WC spots. They gave one to FAA. They gave two to Dutch players. They are still holding on to one. I wonder why? :p

Roger isn't playing there and he shouldn't since AO was just two weeks ago. I'm all for him playing Dubai and if he does well there and IW maybe he skips Miami.

Personally I would rather he plays the sunshine double and skips Dubai. It's less points. No need for it. I feel his game is strong enough despite the slower conditions

^For me, Roger getting to 100 titles is far far more important than #1. And even then.. if he focuses on a tight schedule he could easily pull off both this year

I'm not sure you understand my point. I don't care about #1

I just rather he gets to #1 now so that he doesn't do something stupid like last year. And it will be another record if he gets it, also happens to be one he will steal from Rafa as he is currently the oldest #1 in the Open Era or at least he's close (not sure if Andre was briefly #1 at an older age than Rafa is now). But normally I of course agree that it'd be best to save himself for Sunshine Double. In theory if he goes all the way at IW but plays several tough matches he'd probably withdraw from Miami. Last year Fed didn't drop a set at IW and also got a walkover from Nick

Lol! You and #1. Roger has #1 records that will be prohibitive for Rafa or Novak to surpass. Not sure I care so much about this, although, if he is sensible he'll almost certainly get it at some point this year. And that includes not being a moron in the approach to the USO this year. I mean... seriously... if he didn't learn the lesson from last year then he really deserves the same punishment. More important is getting to 100+ titles mate. And more slams. #1 is just a trivial distraction

I hear you bud but I'm also looking at it as though he can avoid the temptation of chasing it at a worse time. Dubai is a smaller tournament and a great one for him and it is 4 months away from his next major. The thing about Miami is if he goes deep in IW and plays a bunch of tough matches it may be best for him to scrap it. Just look at last year, if his IW was as tough as his Miami there's no way he'd have played Miami...

Andre currently has the record for oldest #1. Rafa has the record for oldest YE#1.

Thanks, was thinking that was the case. Rafa is probably closing in on that but I expect Roger will make that a moot point soon

LOL, Darth...it is amazing how much 'too much' is never enough for you. And you can't stand it that Rafa is oldest YE#1. (He's got more than a year to go to pass Andre, who was 33+ as oldest #1.) I'm with Federberg that the #1 will take care of itself, if he keeps winning, or plays a little clay, say. And I do think you care more than he does...this notion of him being "tempted" at the wrong time. What he did last year was unlike him, and I'll bet he learned from it.
