That's very open and appealing from Roger.

I guess he wants to avoid to lose too many pts and become N°4

Nah. Top 4 is all he would be working to protect. 2, ,3, 4...all the same. He might be motivated to protect dropping from the top 4 looking forward to Roland Garros.

I am most interested to see if he can weather all of his matches this week, however many there may be. One of his most interesting stats is the fact that he has never retired out of a professional tennis match. Never.

If he does become hobbled during a match, will he stay on court and take the beating or concede?

#2 is definitely important because it means he wouldn't play Nole until the finals. I don't think it will matter for RG because too many people can beat him but certainly Roger would like to be #2 for Wimbledon, Olympics, and USO.

That tweet is a little bit hilarious, if it weren't so worrying about Delpo. I have to think it's not bad for Roger to just come back on clay in MC. Would have been a drag if he got all the way to Miami, only to get a stomach virus and withdraw.

Roger Federer's official statement regarding withdrawal at Roland Garros:

I regret to announce that I have made the decision not to play in this year’s French Open. I have been making steady progress with my overall fitness, but I am still not 100% and feel I might be taking an unnecessary risk by playing in this event before I am really ready. This decision was not easy to make, but I took it to ensure I could play the remainder of the season and help to extend the rest of my career. I remain as motivated and excited as ever and my plan is to achieve the highest level of fitness before returning to the ATP World Tour for the upcoming grass court season. I am sorry for my fans in Paris but I very much look forward to returning to Roland Garros in 2017.

Best wishes to Roger Federer for a speedy return to health. He set a record of 65 straight major appearances and was the only player to play in the main draw in every Grand Slam event in this millennium.

Respectfully,
masterclass

True disaster. Hopefully he can play both grass warmups or this is looking like a lost season.

Sad to see the streak broken, but I guess it had to happen at some point. Looking at @masterclass stats, it reminds you what a phenomenal career it's been.

The silver lining is that this might be a blessing in disguise. Roger's clay season was in tatters already and he wasn't going to feature in the business end at Roland Garros in my opinion... not with such little tennis under his belt. More time to practice on grass and prepare for Wimbledon, which is realistically (IMO) is the tournament that gives him his last real shot at winning a major, either this year or next.

For sure, everyone should take a moment to appreciate a 65 consecutive Major streak.

I agree with you on all, BB. Another silver-lining is that he was feeling fit enough to go to Paris and give it a chance. Annacone often speaks of Roger's optimism. But we all know he's also a pragmatist. No sense in putting himself through the slog of the clay Major, when he can get a jump on everyone on grass. @britbox: You said he's play "both" tune-ups. Besides Halle, which other one do you think he'll play?

Hi y'all! I've been absent since forever, but had to visit to say how sad I was to hear Roger's announcement today. It was inevitable that one day his Slam streak would end but still disappointing. I hope that he is better by Wimby time so that he can make a good run, and who knows - win it once more!
I haven't followed a lot of the tournaments this year - been a bummer of a year for Fed fans. :(
Hope any and everyone who remembers me is doing well and enjoying tennis!

That's 16 years of playing all 4 slams, great streak. It had to happen at some point, but this will be hard to beat for a long time.

Most players don't even have a 16-year career.:)

Hey Countess Cosmo! Good to see you. Yeah, bad news about Roger but let's hope it helps his Wimbledon campaign.

Cosmo! It has been forever...so nice to see you around, girl! Not great times for the Federer fan, but he'll have a huge head start on everyone for the grass. Do stick around with us...it's so nice to have you back.

Thanks, guys! I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for Roger for Wimbledon.
I visited there (W) in September - had a private talk with the grass court and said a silent prayer for Roger to win there just one more time!
