Even though participation in WTF event is by invitation only,
WTF event used to be listed typically as part of Federer's schedule
in his homepage right from the beginning of the year. This is the
first year (after his ascendancy) in which the event is not listed
in his schedule posted in his official home page. Also, I believe
it was the case right from the beginning of this year and it is not
the case that they deleted it in the middle of the season after
seeing his performance.

Although I am more than 90% sure of my observations,
I was wondering whether other people can corroborate them.

Also, if true, what does this mean? Does it mean Fed had / has
doubts of making it right from the beginning of this year?

Just curious.

It was there for over half the year even as recently as 2-3 weeks ago last time I checked so must really have been just removed given his terrible year.

I've just figured this out. Do you know how many top 15 wins Fed had since AO? (scroll down for answer)

Answer is only 1.

And this was the statistic he dominated for five or so years starting in late 2003. His record for two or three of those years was astounding--he was practically unbeatable by anyone on any surface other than Nadal on clay. He has aged, the tour professionals have become accustomed to him, the aura of invincibility has been lost. Even guys that could never quite get over the hump with Roger in the years past are beating him now and then these days. It is happening to Rafa now, even though he won the French and Indian Wells. You can sense guys think he is more vulnerable; look at Darcis, Brands and Delbonis. It will happen to Novak too in the years to come, although we might need to put Murray close to on par with him now.

Very well described the reality happening, shawnbm.
We are not used to see Roger losing any match. But as you said Roger has aged but he has done all, won it all for so long, having set many unreachable records with 17 GSs at the top. I hope his back is not very bad and he makes some mark on hard courts but at this time no one knows how well he will come out.

It is the cycle that new champion comes out every now and then.
At this time Djokovic and Murray are certainly in the lead. Roger and Nadal are both having some question marks. No clue about Roger's back and Rafa's knee or preparations. I think Nadal is in a better shape than roger at this time and will make statements in future competitions. We will have to wait and see.

I wonder why people thought he'd hang on indefinitely? It had to happen sooner or later! I joked earlier about him selling his soul to take another Wimbledon and to get back to #1! The bill has come due; "hello Satan!" :clap :laydownlaughing

Draw is scheduled for 4 p.m. local time on Friday.
I am sure Fed would be courteous enough to inform them
before that if he is not playing.

Given that we are not hearing anything about it, I would
presume he is ready to fight with his new sword and some
shields on the back.

I think you are right.

I have not heard anything. no news is good news at this point.

so the back is well and he is ready to give it a go.

the reasoning might be that he needs a few matches under his belt and then he can try to defend his title in cincy.

Dream on! You might as well take those 1000 points off his total! :snigger :nono  I'm as much a Fed fan as anyone, but you have to be realistic people! He can't "shake off father time" forever! Even Martina had to say good-bye in '94 approaching 40! She went out with class in a Wimbledon final! Not sure Roger can even make another major run! He used up a lot just taking that last one in '12!

Forgive me for being too open, but I really like your posts, Fiero. I wish and only hope that Nole has half of success that Roger has in his 30ies. He may, but I am not so sure about that. I think it is just crazy how long Roger has stayed on top. If I were his fan, I wouldn't regret if he hangs his racquet tomorrow. Although who knows with him, he might surprise you. He needs to be close to 100% healthy, have a bit of luck and voila a final in USO. I am not counting him out yet.:)

So far, he's still in.

And last year, he got back to #1, against all predictions. I would caution against smugness.

Federer wasn't dropping like a stone in the rankings at the time of his reemurgence last season! He's at #5 and about to drop to #6 in a week or so! Let's not go totally whacko thinking he has another soul to sell to the Devil! lol! :snigger :snigger I suppose anything can happen, but he'd have to duplicate his fall and winter of 2011, win the WTF, then make a run at the Aussie Open! Making a commitment to play Brisbane won't be enough! :nono :nono

Fiero (and others)---As has been stated numerous times by posters and Roger himself, he's been suffering from back problems at least as far back as Indian Wells. If he heals, I wouldn't count him out by any means. If the problems persist, it will become increasingly difficult for him physically and ego-wise to stay in the game.

Honey, it's called getting old! He's not going to get better! He won't and can't take any significant time off so forget it; he's about done! Sorry! :snigger :laydownlaughing

It'll happen to Novak too, don't worry.

Not NOW though; sooner for Rafa, poor thing! I keep telling people he works too hard to beat players you haven't even heard of! I've always believed you only have a finite amount of time and energy in sports and Nadal burned bright to get what he won! Roger's game was more effortless which gave him more time, but it's still catching up to him!

Well I did say will, not has. Naturally he's got a good few years to go before he hits Fed's age and it's not clear if he'll even still be playing at nearly 32. Just find it funny that you said a few posts back you like Fed so I wouldn't write him off just yet. He's had back problems on and off now for a while and all it takes is for him to have a patch of play where he feels better than normal and he's back in business. His back was at him even since Madrid last year and look how many tournaments he won last year, including Wimbledon where he had nasty back spams against Malisse but still won the title. Obviously it seems worse this year but who knows if it will improve. He says it's spasms that come and go. The one thing to consider is that Del Potro who is 8 years younger than Fed and much more bust up than Fed with the list of injuries he's had, including major wrist surgery, had completely fallen off the radar in terms of ranking and level of play and has made it back to world number 7.

That should give hope to Federer and his fans. He's done so badly this year that he can gain points practically everywhere next year, much like Nadal this year. If he does badly in 2014 people may be more correct to write him off. For now, it's way too early.

I am having hard time believing those things, to be honest. Rafa's knees will start soon hurting again on HC and Roger ain't winning much on clay anymore. Sorry.

vilas obviously made a mistake in saying and thinking that roger can win the rome masters next year. I cant see that happening.

roger`s best surface is grass and then hard courts going forward. that is where he has to do this thing.

and I do believe that roger loves the game too much to go away anytime soon.
