Hopefully he'll be back a la Arnie. Back pun very much not intended and I hope his back gets better asap.

He's been getting a million dollars and a cow for each tournament he enters just to lose in early rounds. To me it sounds like he's been doing fine.

I've just figured this out. Do you know how many top 15 wins Fed had since AO? (scroll down for answer)

Answer is only 1.

i got to say i'm quite surprised there even was one. i'd have thought it would've been StantheMan at IW, but i guess it was Haas in Halle.

you can find a million different stats of describing it, but the fact of the matter is that 2013 Federer is bad.

Yep. Pretty poor year.

Right. And the back was a factor only in IW, and now on clay in the last 2 weeks.

Sources close to him have been saying his lower back has been taped for months and even wearing a back brace and he's never been one to moan about body ailments apart from that time in 2010 against Berdych. Rather than talk to the press about it constantly, he took 2 months off after IW but it obviously didn't fully heal things. I 've various nagging pains from lifting weights over the years and they never really go away. Same with back pain. Might be better than usual at times but it's always lingering unfortunately.

As bad as Federer has been - relative to his own standard - he's still #6 in the Race to London rankings, just behind Berdych and just ahead of Tsonga and Del Potro. Stanislas is #9 with 545 points less than Roger, so Roger has SOME breathing room but needs to at least hold his own to make the WTF.

Yes, I should've stated it was not mentioned as an issue. In contrast of course, when Rafa loses, the 'knees" are always part the rhetoric.

Even though participation in WTF event is by invitation only,
WTF event used to be listed typically as part of Federer's schedule
in his homepage right from the beginning of the year. This is the
first year (after his ascendancy) in which the event is not listed
in his schedule posted in his official home page. Also, I believe
it was the case right from the beginning of this year and it is not
the case that they deleted it in the middle of the season after
seeing his performance.

Although I am more than 90% sure of my observations,
I was wondering whether other people can corroborate them.

Also, if true, what does this mean? Does it mean Fed had / has
doubts of making it right from the beginning of this year?

Just curious.

Federer might be best sitting out the remainder of the year after the US Open for a proper recuperation period.

I think this depends on how persistent his back issues are. If he has back issues on most weeks, then it's hard for him; it hurts not only his tournament playing but also practising, making it hard to perform well at tournaments even when his back is OK. But if his back is OK on most weeks, then I don't think he's done yet. He may have some bad weeks but he can also play well and practise well. But getting back to top 4 would be important, that way he could avoid top 4 players in QF.

Actually I think they deleted it. I never checked his calendar ever but it was posted on our forum and discussed in detail, that he will tackle a reduced calendar this year, with no showing in Basel initially. WTF was listed and I said to myself quite cocky to assume that he will be in the finals automatically.

Answer is only 1.

And this was the statistic he dominated for five or so years starting in late 2003. His record for two or three of those years was astounding--he was practically unbeatable by anyone on any surface other than Nadal on clay. He has aged, the tour professionals have become accustomed to him, the aura of invincibility has been lost. Even guys that could never quite get over the hump with Roger in the years past are beating him now and then these days. It is happening to Rafa now, even though he won the French and Indian Wells. You can sense guys think he is more vulnerable; look at Darcis, Brands and Delbonis. It will happen to Novak too in the years to come, although we might need to put Murray close to on par with him now.

Very well described the reality happening, shawnbm.
We are not used to see Roger losing any match. But as you said Roger has aged but he has done all, won it all for so long, having set many unreachable records with 17 GSs at the top. I hope his back is not very bad and he makes some mark on hard courts but at this time no one knows how well he will come out.

It is the cycle that new champion comes out every now and then.
At this time Djokovic and Murray are certainly in the lead. Roger and Nadal are both having some question marks. No clue about Roger's back and Rafa's knee or preparations. I think Nadal is in a better shape than roger at this time and will make statements in future competitions. We will have to wait and see.
