He does need to play, he was two months without hitting one single ball and whatever can play now it's going to help him to find the game as a good training for the next tournaments. His best wish is to carry the Spanish flag, Federer and Novak already did it for their countries. He missed the Olympics 2012 , now he has the opportunity to do it and looking him as a flag-bearer will make me to feel very proud :smooch:

I know, it's a slippery slope. Practice pales next to competition and he does have to put his toe in the water again. I'm just concerned with that wrist and hope it doesn't further damage it.

Risk and Reward I guess. I have no doubt if it was any other tournament... maybe even a grand slam then Rafa would sit it out. I think he's aware of how much he's got left in the tank and aware of his tennis mortality... and probably acutely aware that he isn't going to get this chance again in his lifetime.

I'd say he's probably pragmatic about his chances in the SIngles - a long shot but wants to be a part of the Olympic experience one last time. I think he's earned the right to cherry pick what he wants to do.

I agree with everything you've said.

Kuerten talks about the withdrawal of Federer, predicts Djokovic/Murray final.

kuerten has been MISSED.

hje was such a wonderful player and personality.

i remember that time -- was it 2000? 2001?

when he became number one very briefly by defeating BOTH agassi and sampras in miami. it was amazing how he played . because the other guys were playing quite well at that time.

and gustavo just played gloriously!

RAFA says it feels ok so far -- but even he probabl/y can't be sure what it will be able to endure under real constant practicing and playing from this point.

let's hope it's healed COMPLETELY -- we all MISS rafa at his best and i am sure his great rivals do too!
Well, his great rivals probably don't miss his best and I wouldn't blame them....:D

so true.

also -- rafa and team probably aim to be in tune for USOPEN ..

so -- if he has to start getting into the flow and rhythm -- it might as well be NOW...

HOW else is he going to find out? and even if he doesn't get far in RIO - it is a good test now of how much his wrist can withstand -- and then it gives them more time to assess and pace and adjust his schedule building up to USO.

and then any other ''problems' that crop up they can address afte USO , take a long rest, rehab, whatever...but at least see how far he gets in the ''grand slam season" .

Novak Djokovic is favourite to come away with the gold medal in Rio with odds of 10/11. Wimbledon champion Andy Murray is backed at 9/4 to be victorious and Rafael Nadal is third-favourite to win gold at 14/1.
