Del Potro's ballbashing just can't be handled here. It just depends whether the five set format can rattle him or not, he played even better than he did against Novak in R1. He lost a set because Nadal played fantastic at times, but just had no answer to thise missiles. This match shows how great of a player Juan is, and how unfortunate he is with his glass wrists. I hope he can storm the tour and win a big title with his newly found confidence.

It's like he's saying f**k these stupid slow courts, I'll show them the way he's belting the balls. He'll be very tricky on the faster surfaces if he keeps this form and improves his DTL forehand.
Slow and high bouncing is usually a good combination for Del Potro as it gives him time to regularly go for the forehand and if he hits the forehand well he will give any opponent problems regardless of the speed of the court.

Medium fast hard courts with a rather high bounce also used to be a good surface for him but I think the lack of offensiveness from the backhand will hurt him more there than on slower courts and it might be easier to attack his forehand as he will have less time to hit quality forehands on the run.

Would be nice to see Del Potro doing well in the Asian swing. Shame his ranking is too low to make the WTF.

If he can win USO, he has a good chance of making it to WTF through special route (provided he is ranked in top 20, which is almost guaranteed if he wins USO). Hope he does that this year.

True but I don't expect him to win 7 best of 5 matches so I didn't even mention it. Not a hope of that happening with no backhand. Best of 3 here is why he's able to do well but he'll probably lose badly to Murray.

Wow, great win from Del Potro! I thought after Nadal won the first set, he would win in straights but Delpo showed why he could have been a great player without those wrist injuries. Reaching the Gold Medal match is already a great accomplishment for him especially beating Djokovic and Nadal along the way. However, I do not see him beating Murray tomorrow in a best of 5 format. Murray would just maneuver him from side to side all day long. Also, Delpo has got to be physically and mentally exhausted from all the Tennis he has played in this Olympics.

As for Nadal, it is already a great Olympics for him as he was able to be flag bearer and he was able to win a Gold Medal with Marc Lopez in Doubles. I don't expect him to win tomorrow against Nishikori because of all the Tennis he has played in this Olympics. Furthermore, playing a 3 hour long match the day before would surely affect his level of play. I'm just hoping the match will be competitive tomorrow.

While everyone is rooting for Del Potro (as it should be) tomorrow, I will root for Murray to win his 2nd Gold Medal. I know Murray has a Gold Medal already but winning a 2nd one would be a special one because of his shortcomings in Grand Slams.

Great, then we are two of us cheering for Muzz

Rio has proven very fruitful for Jack Sock. He won the bronze doubles with Steve Johnson. Congrats to those guys by the way. He is guaranteed at least a silver in the mixed doubles. Hopefully these moments light a fire in these guys to improve.

LOL, that was absolutely nothing. What the hell ? Can't believe someone even bothered to upload that. Del Potro did absolutely nothing wrong there.

No, they won't light any such fire. Sock had already won a mixed doubles trophy at USO with Melanie Oudin. Sock has also won Wimbledon Men's Doubles title with Popsicle. If those things did not light a fire, I don't see why these two fairly insignificant doubles victories should.

Of course, it is better to have insignificant wins than nothing. All I am saying is that you should not expect any lighting of fire.

Are you kidding me? That's hilarious. :lolz:

"You want to say something else about my mum?" :laydownlaughing Murray has a bit of a Sean Connery James Bond drawl, but that hardly sounds like something Bond would say. That's the funniest thing I'll see all day. The Irish umpire, of course, handled these two little boys perfectly. :popcorn

I think they've since moved on from that though...

Delpo was able to protect his bh vs Nadal but not against Murray. Hopefully Rafa will withdraw and give the bronze to Kei

I don't know Nadal is more adept than Murray true he is coming back from injury, but DelPo did well with it against Nadal. The thing that favors DelPo is the court is playing slower, so he has the time to set up for his forehand. However, I think energy level will be key to this match, and Andy will have it in spades unless DelPo has another gear and lights a fire to go for that gold. I want DelPo to surprise and stun Murray, but I doubt that is in the cards.

Delpo's serve yesterday was much better than all his previous matches which helped him a lot but Muzz is showing to be plenty of energy so if Delpo wants to have a chance he will have to serve well trying to do free points but even that I don't see him winning

Lately I find Murray's return of serve is even better than Djokovic's and he'll get most of Del Potro's serves back and run him ragged left and right till poor Juan can't run anymore. If Murray goes passive at any stage though he could make things trickier than they should be but I expect him to keep the pressure on, running Del Potro side to side the whole match and probably a few drop shots too. I imagine Del Potro will serve less than 5 aces against Murray.

Johnson had quite a bit of success against Murray with playing predominantly slice from the backhand and powerful from the forehand so that's a tactic that should come natural to Del Potro too. As Murray isn't that great at generating pace on his own he will need to play out of his comfort zone if he wants to attack the slice or give Del Potro chances to use the forehand if he slices back.

Actually Del Potro successfully employed that tactic when he beat Murray at Indian Wells in 2013. Although IW is one of Murray's worst hard court tournaments the court in Rio plays somewhat similar so the general match-up should be quite favorable for Del Potro on this kind of surface. But with him having played only rather tough matches to get to the final and probably not being in top shape regarding stamina yet, I expect Murray's advantages in consistency and fitness to be too much to overcome over best-of-five.
