Nobody left in the women's draw has won any type of medal at Olympics before. We will have three newly minted medalists.

Yeah - not that bad me thinks. Nice to see new faces. Specially like Kasatkina - see if she can continue her good play.
The only thing that "irritates" me a great deal is - why have the WTA left out the points this time? Meanwhile they are losing points from last year like Bencic with 900 - yeah well - we only have to accept it but strange it is to me.

It is not just WTA. ATP players also don't get points this time. ITF failed to financially compensate the tournaments held during the same weeks as the Olympics (the way they did before). As a punishment to ITF, ATP and WTA decided that they won't let points be awarded in Olympics.

Well iI don't think it's ITF they punish - but the players.

After the next round, there will be four players left. What happens then? I thought I heard there will be two bronze medalists. Is that right?

Hoping Keys doesn't beat herself. I think Petra will medal.

They are losing those points now because I believe those are the points that come off from Rogers Cup as it was held around the time the Olympics are currently happening.

The two losers of SF play a match and the winner of that match gets bronze. Many years ago, they used to give two bronze medals; they no longer do that.

Bold prediction: the Williams sisters losing early will help Madison Keys break through to more of the "mainstream" audience in the U.S. Especially if she manages to upset Kerber, but either way she will be the top American female tennis player in singles action this weekend (either Gold or Bronze medal match).

If she does go off and wins the whole thing, I think it might get played up as a "passing of the baton"... although I don't think Serena is quite done winning yet, but still.

No shock that Svitolina lost. Petra can beat anyone when focused.

Serena predicted that Keys will get to number one. I agree. She chose a great coach to help. I do wonder about Woz's choice of coach.

David Kotyza is coach for Caroline but he's not with her in all tournaments it's an agreement they've made so David also can be with his family. And no need to be with her in Rio - it's a national case. He'll be with her on hard court. He was actually putting on some great work when Caroline got injured when she fell in a training session in Monaco just before the clay season. Actually both parts have been waiting for this but Petra was in between. Hope this clear things a bit. Coming back from this serious injury takes time.

Do we think the Olympics will have any effect on what happens at the US Open? Will the medalists go far or flame out early? I can see expectations hitting Kerber again if she gets the gold and how close she is to the number 1 ranking. It would be nice to see Kvitova take the gold. Lord knows we could use something positive on that front. Keys medaling would be nice and a nice compliment to her slow rise.

These folks have Cincy in between to disappoint the expecting people and so they will be fine for USO.

If they play Cincy. I don't know if playing Cincy after the Olympics is smart scheduling. Serena needs to play as she needs to get things in order before the US Open.

Keys sat in the crowd during Kerber victory today. I have found that when you observe a potential opponent live, it really gives you a real insight to dissect their tendencies. It may prove useful for Madison.

What do you mean by mainstream audience in the U.S.?
