Puig wins gold! Huge upset! Congrats to Puerto Rico! First gold medal ever for that country and first female medalist there too!

Congratulations to Monica! :clap

She played fearless tennis. Even after going down 0-40 in the last game she did not lose heart. Finally got it done in 4th Match Point (or is it 5th?).

Kerber messed up easy swinging volley at the net multiple times.

What is up with Puertoricans? Is it their choice to decide whether they want to play for Puertorico or USA? Does any one know?

Apparently, had Monica chosen to play for USA, she would not even have made the team as Monica is ranked only 34 and all the current four members of the USA team are higher ranked than her and there is a limit of 4 singles players per country.

Oh boy, that swinging volley of Martina hit Andrea in the face and fractured an orbital bone . Poor Andrea spent all night at the hospital going through CT scan and evaluations and then played the bronze medal match today bravely (and lost that as well).

I don't think Martina did it intentionally. However, Martina could have definitely shown some compassion and sympathy after she hit, instead of being so cold.

I guess you have to at least show some fake compassion! It would have been hard for me too if I didn't care! Fortunate for me, I've been lucky enough to miss being hit or giving out punishment more than a few times over 30 years of playing the game! :nono  :dodgy:

Factoid: Monica Puig was named after Monica Seles (just like Martina Hingis was named after Martina Navaratilova).

Getting hit is part of the game. I don't think Hingis wanted to hurt or injured the young player. I have been hit and have hit opponents . All I will say is my aim is pretty spot on.

The established pair of Vesnina and Makarova won against the new pair of Timea and Martina. But, I am glad that Martina got some medal at least (after two of her scheduled partners ditching and playing in Olympics after 20 years).

Didn't see it but that's pretty lousy about the fractured orbital bone. If I were her I'd aim one right for Hingis' knashers next time. Can't miss. Easy target.
