With the clay season, half way through it is time to update the odds.

As of today, the odds given by bookmakers are as follows.

Novak ---1 (50%)
Rafa ---- 5/2 (27%)
Kei ------ 20 (5%)
Andy ---- 25 (4%)
Fed ------ 25 (4%)

We're so spoiled! Who would have thought Fed is not even in the running; needing to play "lights out" just not to be upset in an early round of the FO? I haven't seen his match today in Istanbul, but to allow this kid to take him to the limit in this little warm-up doesn't bode well for his chances in Paris! I still sorta remember "Black Monday" when both Becker and Edberg were upset in the 1st round back in '90! Just as well with Wimbledon pending! I still think Edberg going 5 sets in his previous final against Chang hurt him by the time he got to grass a couple weeks later in '89! :cover :nono

That was one depressing month for me. First losing from behind against Chang.. .at the time virtually a nobody. And then Boris just dominated him at SW19 :cry

Edberg was one of the few top players who never missed a major; year in and year out making all 4 no matter his chances! Like Federer now, I suggested he skip the FO; it wasn't going to happen after '89! :cover Now Federer is even older thinking he has a chance! :puzzled :nono

I've never placed a bet in my life, so I have no idea how this works, but would someone earn much money with these odds if they bet on Novak, and he ends up winning?

Yes, If you put $100 you will get approximately $200 back if novak wins making about $100 profit.
If novak loses, you will lose the $100.

See, I'm as confused as tented. I'm no gambler either. I thought that at odds of 10/11, you place down $100 and get back $110...

I said approximately (being too lazy). Actually, exactly you are wrong as well If you bet $100 on
Novak right now and if he wins you will get back $190.90 for a profit of $90.90

Yeah, how can you double your money with those odds? I don't get it. Please be patient with us, GSM! Thanks.

These are fractional odds, Your profit is what you bet multiplied by given odds. You get the original
amount back in addition. Of course, if you lose you get nothing back.

Note that there is no point in offering an odds that gives you less than what you put in.
Suppose, let us say that some betting house says if you place a bet of $100 on Novak winning,
we will give you $90 back if Novak wins and nothing if Novak loses, then nobody will want to
place a bet and you don't have to be a mathematician to realize that.

You may be wondering that Novak looks like a sure shot and it is easy way to double your money.
If so, you should bet on him. Of course, now that he won Rome also, his odds will keep decreasing and so place your bet fast.

Said it before and I'll say it again, you'll get much better odds for Wimbledon or even Queens. Put €100 or $100 on some donkey with a big serve and powerful ground strokes to beat Rafa in and you have much better odds right there :p Straight sets bets would be better odds but riskier obviously. Probably not so risky for Queens though and worth a punt. You're talking double money for Novak to win RG or something like 15/1 on some clown to beat Rafa on grass. I got ridiculous odds on Dustin Brown to beat him at Halle. Can't remember the exact odds but they were huge. Likewise many bookies offer bets on Murray to lose the first set and win the match and this happens A LOT! A good bet to consider for Queens or Wimbledon or any tournament for that matter imo. He often comes out flat as a pancake and gets his act together after dropping the first set meekly.

Paddy Power often offer as much as 12/1 for Murray to drop first set and win the match. That's a steal imo. If Federer plays Berdych it's always a 50/50 match these days depending on the form of each but often the outcome is one guy wins 3 sets to 1. A safe bet then is to back the number of sets in the match. If you don't know who's gonna win but think it'll be over in 4 sets just choose outcome 4 sets or I like the over/under bets too. Guessing if the match will have over or under a certain amount of games is good too. There was a time when Murray v Djokovic matches would almost always go 5 sets in slams so guessing over 36 games in the match was a good bet.

Agreed front. Safe bets are never the one which predict the winner of a whole tournament.

Can't recall the odds but had €500 for him to win in 2 sets. They were huge odds though.

Thank you, GSM! That helps us non-betting folks.
