Do you really think pushing the 'economic' factor will allow Djokovic to play? time is running out the draw for IW is set for March 5th
It's an argument worth making. This is from a Miami (i.e., US) sports event that has a fixed time-line, and they'd like to have the world #1 as a draw to ticket sales. This item was from the Miami Herald, which is obviously only about the Miami event. (They mention that Nadal will not play, but that is no surprise, since he's already said he won't play IW.) They say the chance is slim of Novak getting in for Miami. Which seems to make it even slimmer for IW. I have to think that if he were going to get an exemption for IW, we'll hear before the draw. (I hope! Or at least I hope that IW doesn't make the same mistake they made last year and keep him in the draw if they have no word on his visa status.)

Novak saod today he will withdraw before IW/Miami when he hears the outcome, not like last year, when officials had to contact him.his team to officially withdraw
I think we have to put this in some type of context...Novak is a tennis player, he chose not to get vaccinated, the rules are the rules,in what ever country you travel, can he really expect 'a special pass' to enter USA.

Did he say he expected one? No. Did he apply for one? Yes. On May 11 the ban will be lifted. For context, should 2 months make that much difference whether to grant the best tennis player in the world permission to enter the country to compete??

Well rules are rules, which applies to any tennis player regardless of their rank to compete., that also applies to a foreign traveler trying to obtain a 'special pass' to enter the USA., who chose not to be vaccinated. You cant give a 'special pass' to a tennis player, and not to others trying to get into the USA not vaccinated., that is not fair in my opinion

And for this reason, Djokovic is not expecting to be granted an exemption. But it seems you fault the guy for trying.

Immigration: President Biden, Djokovic who is unvaccinated is requesting for an exemption to play Indian Wells and Miami. Do we give it to him?

BIden: Who and what?

Immigration: Novak Djokovic, he is a tennis player.

Biden: I know Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Venus & Serena. I don't know who Navok Dokovic is.

Immigration: The guy who got deported from Australia and disqualified from the USO.

Biden: Oh him...

Immigration: Ok, so we don't give it to him?

Biden: NO. But if the players that I mentioned want the exemption then give it to them, they are icons in the USA.

Immigration: Sir, they are already vaccinated.

BIden: Ok great. Well, don't forget to say hi to Rafael Nadal on my behalf.

Immigration: Sir I don't know him or have his number.

Biden: Find it.

Immigration: Yes sir!

The end.

Exuberant imagination also gives birth to foolishness.

You claim he expects one and then say rules are rules. I’m not senile, yet. My point is that he’s not expecting anything. I doubt he’d be in Dubai if he was.

I guess it depends which country you are in? But the country I live in we had lockdown laws. Anyway Laws/Rules/Mandates Novax broke a number of them
The devil is in the detail my friend. When you can understand the difference between a law, rule, act, statute and mandate you'll realise why they have different names.

I never thought your were senile btw. , Yes rules are rules, Novak should not expect to get a pass. he is not vaccinated, simple. , as I did say, he has a right to apply for a special pass. Novak was scheduled to play Dubai after the AO, he was always going there regardless of whether he was being allowed to to go to IW/Miami.

Interesting article from the NYTimes today. I realize it will be behind a paywall for most. Here are some interesting parts:

"It’s not clear why Djokovic believes he might qualify for an exemption. The only criteria he would seem to be able to meet involves proving that getting vaccinated would be harmful to his health or that his presence in the United States “would be in the national interest, as determined by the Secretary of State, Secretary of Transportation, or Secretary of Homeland Security (or their designees),” according to the website for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Last month, the House of Representatives passed a bill rescinding the vaccination requirement 227-203, with seven Democrats joining all Republicans voting in favor. Supporters of the bill said the U.S. policy is out of step with the rest of the world, where vaccination requirements for foreigners have largely gone away. The Senate has not voted on the matter, which, according to the C.D.C., will not end automatically in May when the Biden administration plans to end the Covid-19 national and public health emergencies declared in 2020.

Ending the vaccination requirement for foreign travelers will most likely require a separate order from President Biden ending the presidential proclamation that put it into effect."

--------
"Haas, a former world No. 2 who is from Germany, has been lobbying multiple organizations to try to find a way to get Djokovic into the U.S. The United States Tennis Association has been in touch with its government contacts but has stopped short of formally lobbying on Djokovic’s behalf.

“Novak’s situation is obviously frustrating for us,” Haas said. “We want the best tennis player in the world to be here. He’s writing me, he wants to be here. So of course, you’re like, OK, let’s try to make this happen. How can we figure this out that’s going to be realistic? But at the end of the day, unfortunately, that’s not in our hands and that’s what’s frustrating.”

...I would make the comment here that it IS in their hands, or Novak's. He could get vaccinated. But he has said he accepts the consequences of his choice. That's fair.
____

Also interesting is this:

"If President Biden does not change his mind — and that is what it would take at this point — Djokovic must withdraw by Sunday or a player ranked about 100 spots lower may end up taking his favored spot on the draw sheet, Tommy Haas, the tournament director for Indian Wells, said in an interview on Wednesday."

...Does this not imply that Tommy Haas will not take action to prevent the draw from being imbalanced? That seems foolish, to me.

Moxie,
A player has to withdraw citing fatique, injury etc, a tournament official cannot withdraw a player, last year officials had to contact Novak/hiis team to get him to withdraw after he was not granted a pass, he also had to withdrew from Miami, which he did.Novak has said he will withdraw as soon as he hears back from the officials regarding his application for a special pass

I don't think you need to hammer Margaret on the use of the word "expect" here. It was a bit like, "what do you expect?" Obviously, the argument has been made that 2 months shouldn't mean that much, and what threat does he present? However, note that the May 11th expiration doesn't make the travel ban expired for unvaccinated foreign nationals. (See above. "Ending the vaccination requirement for foreign travelers will most likely require a separate order from President Biden ending the presidential proclamation that put it into effect.") Anyway, I don't see why the US Government would turn itself inside out for the sake of a tennis tournament or two. As you say, Novak has made his bed and he seems willing to lie in it.

Oh! Interesting. So even if they know he cannot participate, they cannot withdraw him, and must conduct the draw with him in it? Well, that explains the Haas statement.

Correct, though after last year's stuff up with the draw going ahead, Novak said he would withdraw as soon as he hears back from the 'powers that be'...Draw for IW is scheduled for Monday 6th March at 3pm

March 5th is Sunday, btw. Novak has about 36 hours to withdraw, and I will point out, it's the weekend, so it's hard to imagine that the bureaucrats are working OT to come up with his visa.
