Exactly. Rafa wasn’t fit then. He hasn’t been fit since the start of Wimbledon 2022. He’d normally have chewed the Big T’oe handily, but even if he wouldn’t have so easy, T’oe in that tournament had a blind streak that he hasn’t been remotely close to repeating, yet we were told he’d win a slam by the end of this year.

Same is happening with Ben. You know yourself, we can’t make predictions based on a flash in the pan…

Didn't realize that. He's prone to that unfortunately. Well, genuinely didn't expect him to hold there but still don't think he'll win. Another reason to tank in the hope he recovers for his next match which won't be Djokovic.

I like Ben Shelton he is one of my 'rising starts' after his QF appearance at the AO this year
Ben is still learning, he is very green in areas of the game, great lefty serve and fhand good at the net
I would like to see Ben with another coach than his dad, to work out some of the issues in his game, eg, his return game

Part of me wished he’d retired after withdrawing from Wimbledon. As close to the Borg/Sampras exit as possible. But he was a serious contender at Wimbledon last year. He was playing exceptional all season. After Wimbledon, he knew he wasn’t himself. But if he hit a streak at the USO he also knew he could win that.

Problem for Rafa is, he rarely played himself into form at a slam. Generally he worked hard to get the W and didn’t have a huge serve to rely on to get him cheap games.

I think he’d have retired if he won the USO so he played to see if he could…
