Let's not start equating Stan with Roger. I don't think he carries the same mental baggage. I think he has a better chance than Roger. Beating Roger just reinforces his new found belief. Let's not kid ourselves, Rafa is still the heavy favourite. But a cold heavy day at RG? Stuff can happen..

I missed the end of the second set, did Roger get to match point?

Darth is correct about having to finish these things off, wich Roger was able to in Dubai, but not in IW, nor (so far) here. Never underestimate Stan's proficiency at choking, however! But it's a disappointment for Roger and his fans...

EDIT: having said that, I think most people would admit that he's a more potent force now than he was at any point last year...

No match points for Rog.

^ Definitely potent at getting ahead in matches and losing them like a total donkey alright! Just ask Kei Nishikori.

There is no way that Stan will choke twice. Even once is improbable now.

But he has been in the same situation; up a set and maybe 2 points from closing it out in "straights!" I think he's attacking a little more than usual with Edberg's coaching, but he's not doing it enough and at more appropriate times to keep matches simple! This got too complicated with his stubborness of staying back on the baseline wailing away; now he's done in this Masters!

It'd take one choke, one hold and then one great return game for Roger just to equalize the score at 5-5 but he's completely gone off the boil since 5-5 set 2. Ain't happening.

It seems hard to believe. Since winning the second, I think he feels like I should have lost, so go out and knock the snot out of the ball.

Yeah, I don't know if there is anyone on tour that is easier to rally against from a set down than Federer is. It has been one of his problems since 2008. That's why I cringe when commentators still call him a good front runner. They've clearly missed the last 6 years.

Of course if the great return game happens here, the choke could happen later.

Great winning point. Much respect between them but that was poor from Roger.

To be fair Roger has been like this or worse for about a year and a half, so not as new stan at 3 months.

I'm not that bothered. I didn't expect Roger to be in this final. A bit sad he'll never win this tournament, but can't be too greedy. I prefer to think the glass is half full. If he had any thoughts about being lucky in Australia, this will help Stan really believe!

Congratulations to Stan for his first MS 1000. He really is a different player at 29. His wife is having a bit of a cry.
