Ferrer is totally owned by Roger no question. I would have Roger ahead of him on clay (which I think is what is being spoken about specifically), because I can't see him beating Roger on any surface including clay. I would say though, that he's probably more reliable than Roger in getting through the field on clay now. But I guess this year will put that view to the test. I've been very impressed with Roger's start to the clay season, so it's entirely possible 2013 has coloured my view!

That's what I intended by my remark, federberg…against the field in general, not against each other. I think Ferrer is more fit, and remains intense for the longer matches, but Roger is also playing better this year, and his back is better, so we'll see as this clay season goes forward.

The problem is that you can only use last year to say Ferrer is better against the field. It certainly wasn't the case the 6-7 years before and Roger just did better than him at MC. All signs point to Roger not being anywhere near as bad as last season.

Agreed, and I get the point. This seems to be a new year for Roger. But Ferrer is relentless on clay against most comers. Federer, unfortunately, demonstrated a serious lack of motivation against Wawrinka in the final of tournament that he would surely have wanted to win. Federer may have more weapons, but Ferrer does better with motivation.

I would not give Ferrer the edge over Roger on any surface. It is a match up issue. Ferrer cannot hit Roger off the court like Stan. And Roger never gets into the grind it out type of plays against David, finishes points early. You have to take time away from Roger (or Rafa or Nole) to have a chance against them . Stan can do that, sometimes Delpo or Tsonga can even do that. Berdych can do that (especially to Roger), but not David.

I am serious,I think Roger would be confident if he only had a wooden racket to use against Ferrer. There is nothing about Ferrer's game that poses a threat to Roger.

^ I get what you're saying, but the question of who is good on clay is not just H2H v. each other. It's how you do against the field, and I happen to think that Ferrer has better chances against most of the rest of the field. Certainly in best of 5.

Ferrer got his azz handed to him by Wawrinka a lot worse than Roger lost. I don't think Ferrer's chances are better than Roger's against most players on clay. Nadal might be the only exception. I'm certain Djokovic and most others in the top 10 would rather see Ferrer than Roger. Since you have denied that you have Spanish fever maybe it has just inflicted your keyboard :)

I agree that H2H does not prove who is better on clay, although I think Fed is ahead of Ferrer, but I agree that AP's argument is spurious. Only the rest of the season will tell, but Fed is doing better so far (duh!).

It's all changing in 2014 as Ferrer has been quoted as saying he feels he's losing his physical edge. Since that was what was keeping him so consistent on clay and everywhere else, we may see a dip in results this year compared to last.

Yes, and right after this article came out, Ferrer managed to beat Nadal on clay for the first time in 10 years.

Moxie is our agreement re Ferrer a concession on your part that H2H is not the primary consideration in determining a players status? Only joking! :D

We'll see how well his form continues over the next few months. Hopefully this win can give him a lot of confidence, but I, too, see a small drop-off with Ferrer. That's not to say he still can't play great tennis here and there, but I think consistency is more the issue.

That's probably why he decided to play less clay tourneys this year (no Estoril in 2014). He wants to save his energy for big tourneys and protect his body from injuries, he's more than 30, almost a grandpa in sports
