Incidentally the one time Stan beat Roger at this very tournament in 2009, Roger won Roland Garros. So I doubt he's too gutted about that one loss.

Unfortunately as a fan, a big ol' asterisk has to be placed by his name at the FO since Soderling took out Nadal before the final! It's getting uglier and uglier as time goes on with someone we think of as the GOAT with a rival that owned him; esp. on clay! Laver had his Hoad and Sampras a couple players like Krajicek that have hurt him at important events!

And hadn't Roger just got married right before then, and had to take a wild card to get into MC? I seem to remember him being too distracted and unprepared, and wasn't sure why he even went. I also seem to remember the Wawrinka match was Fed's first (and last!) that year at MC.

No, there's no asterisk next to this win. Roger has no control over who he plays. He can, and did, only play those in front of him, and he won RG. End of story.

Maybe they should just put Nadal in the final Fiero and not ask him to play the rounds like everyone else.

Cue plenty of Stan's puzzled stares at his box that he always does when things aren't going his way.

Maybe it's getting uglier to you. It's still 17-13 to me and everyone else in the numbers that count most.

Maybe you want an asterisk so for Wimbledon 2010 since Berdych took out Federer and Nadal only had to beat Berdych who's another one of his pigeons? Doesn't work that way. We could list endless examples where the guy who had won it before many times or was a heavy favourite lost before the final. That's not the fault of the other finalist who had to make it that far on their own merits by beating the opponents they faced.

Before this turns into yet another occasion to argue and debate some aspect of Nadal, let's keep this focused on this year's MC final, and utilize other threads to discuss non-related topics. (And, yes, I realize I've already participated in some of what I'm now trying to avoid, but recent memories of other threads are resurfacing quickly ...)

That's what makes Federer's record so much more impressive than Sampras' IMO; too many Piolines, Phillippousises, Changs, and Moyas on that winning list in major finals! Federer did have more wins over top players and his main rival winning his majors, but he's still woefully behind in the win/loss column under Rafa! There were more upsets back in Sampras' era to make it a little easier on him to get to 14 majors; his personal pigeon in the last final at USO in '02!

As tented says we should get back on topic but it's all to do with matchup issues of lefty topspin of epic proportions to one handed bh. It's the same tactic in every match like a broken record but the fact that he has been mostly unable to solve it proves further that it's a major matchup issue and frankly it hasn't half as much bearing as people tend to try and make on the GOAT claims since you play the field and not one player.

So many rules, regulations, and etiquette lessons to be learned here! It's getting about as old as anything! One rogue post and people flip out! Why do I bother? :nono :puzzled  :(

Eh, you're kidding, right? Phillippoissus goes under the Federer column, alongside Baggy, Gonzo & A-Rod.

But what about Rafa, for going through great rivals to win majors! Impressive, innit! :clap :spacecadet::emperor:

Back on topic, I gave this one a bit of thought. Pressure will be more on Stan, and Federer will channel his old self to reassert the pecking order.

Wodger in two tight sets...

Yeah, Roger is in Stan's head. And then there's Roger's game, which causes Stan all kinds of nightmares. Between the two, plus Roger's added motivation finally to win MC, they will make him unstoppable.

Pretty much the only way I see Fed losing this is if he has a huge mental lapse, and succumbs to the pressure.

I have no horse in this race! Roger's the best, but I hope Stan can assert himself and gain a measure of respect with addition of a Master to go along with that major! You don't want to end up being like Pat Cash with a Wimbledon and nothing much else that I can think of!

^ Stan has much to be proud of already. He also has an Olympic gold medal in doubles and seeing as he appears to be going in the trend of player hitting his peak at a late age, he likely has much time left to win a Masters event if he fails tomorrow.

I can see him winning somewhere like the Paris masters perhaps.

But like Cash's Davis Cup win, no one thinks of those team accomplishments; esp. if doubles involved!
