Oh well Novak's 100th title will have to wait, I mean he had a easy path to the final until he ran into a young man that showed nerves of steel, and didnt back away when it mattered
Not bad winning your first title a Masters 1000!

He's grown on me a lot today.
I think the announcers said it well, that with the last two matches, we saw him improve match to match in real time. I kind of think that's how breakouts happen: a young player finds a new level, wins, and knows what it feels like to play at his best.

It might take a bit to stabilize, but he's clearly an elite talent.

Oh, he's the first guy younger than Alcaraz to win a big title (Rune's a month older). I mark 2004 as the new, "post-Sincaraz" gen and Mensik was born in 2005.

Mensik definitely stepped up a level today, embraced the moment without fear. Novak dropped a level from his previous few matches, esp. on serve. Conditions didn't suit him tonight but this comes with age, too...he peaked maybe too early? His numbers were pretty good, and Mensik was just too good. But he looked hot and tired, and not up for it.

Novak had a easy draw to the final, he just met a young man that believed, didnt back down and played the big points better than Novak and won the 7 TBs he was in, in Miami, Mensik played well in all the facets of his game, even his fhand held up, a shot he can improve on

Commentator says he's just the 4th player to win his first title at a MS 1000. I guess the trivia question is: who are the other 3?

Mensik will have a career high of 24# in the live rankings, not 25# as I posted before, I will correct it

Once Novak gets over the disappointment of today, he will remember that he didn't so much need to win this title, compared to how much he's playing a LOT better than he has in ages, so he'll go into the clay season feeling pretty good, I should think.

Wow!
Mensik almost withdrew from Miami, he was holding the paper to pull out from the tournament, his knee was hurting a lot.I was lucky the referee was having lunch. So he saw the physio instead, and thanked him for working a miracle, thanks to him I am standing here.

Maybe. Who did he really play that would have challenged him? I think we'll have a better gauge on his level when he plays someone in the top 15 on the clay. Seb, Dimi and company are not really grade A competition. I understand he can only play who's in front of him, but this week was basically gift-wrapped with a green bow and he couldn't capitalize.

Well, one I don't have to look up: Roberto Carretero won his first and only title as a Masters. The rest, I'll have to look up...

First title as big title:

2025 Jakob MENSIK - Miami Masters
2001 Albert PORTAS - Hamburg Masters
1997 Chris WOODRUFF - Canada Masters
1997 Gustavo KUERTEN - Roland Garros
1996 Roberto CARRETERO - Hamburg Masters
1985 Tim MAYOTTE - Delray Beach
1982 Mats WILANDER - Roland Garros
1976 Mark EDMONDSON - Australian Open

So the answer is Mensik, Portas, Woodruff, Carretero, and Mayotte. Not great company. Portas also won his first and only title as a Masters.

ITA! He got a nice workout & recovered some of his stamina! Even though he didn't necessarily play any top players, he still looked sharp & his footwork was good! He didn't lose a set en route to yet another Masters Final at 37+! I think if he gets a good draw in Monte Carlo, gets some upsets to help out, he can acquire yet another milestone; his 3rd Golden Masters! :astonished-face::yawningface::fearful-face::face-with-hand-over-mouth:

Mullet does it! See, they just need to move this tourney 3 hours north where I am and it could still be called the Sunshine Doub, but it was 88 and sunny all day.
Or move it to Charlotte. It needs a Masters, considering how much money was put into building that complex. Otherwise, it would be going to waste.

Anywhere is Florida, especially after February, is a no for me. It just rains too much in Florida. We have a tough time running the Daytona 500 without delays.

Depends on what part. For me it only rains constantly during the rainy season (Jun-Aug). South FL is unpredictable, plus there's more humidity. Anyway, Charlotte in March may not be warm enough to play outdoors and have snowbirds sitting in the elements all day. I know you'd like it to be so, but I don't see Charlotte getting Miami. I thought their best option would have been Cinci, but it saved at the 9th hour.

I think it's also worth remembering the heavy South and Central American population in the Miami area, and how much this is the "Latin Slam," though I don't think anyone calls it that. Look at the crowds and support for young Fonseca this year! Charlotte would not be the same. I think it should stay in Miami.

Yet another empty hole in Rafa's resume! He got to Miami Masters finals enough times, but failed to win it along w/ no YEC's or Paris Masters! :face-with-hand-over-mouth:

The 2025 Miami tournament drew 405,448 attendance setting a record for the 40 year old ATP/WTA event and marking the first time it has crossed 400,000. the previous high was 395,683 last year.
Last October Endeaver announced its intention to explore a sale of IMG events including Miami Open and Madrid Open, another joint ATP/WTA tournament.
Endeaver CEO Ari Emanuel and CVC Capital Partners are thought to be among the bidders.
Presently there hasnt been a sale of Miami or Madrid Open.
