I don’t think he can make it, he is not enough good in clay and grassI think Medvedev is burnt out. This was 2-3 tournament after Ozzy. Not so good timetable, would guess he is trying to become No.1 at end of the year. Others are more resting and preparing for clay season
I'm not saying he tanked the match, but that he tanked a few points when he got frustrated. And then he had no fight left in him after he let the air out of his game attitude. I give full credit to RBA, who is a tough out and has his talents. But, with all respect to you and to @rafanoy1992, I think it's fair to expect full effort and actual ambition out of these guys who are reaching the high echelons of men's tennis. Sure, they're not Roger, Rafa, Novak, in terms of talents and championship chops, but I do want them to step up to opportunities when the present themselves. I want to see that the want it. And now add Tsitsipas to the list of those who can't embrace an opportunity.I do not buy all this talking of 'tanking' by Medvedev if you want to see a tanker go and watch the King Of Tankers Bernard Tomic! Why would he want to tank away this match when he could have reached the final and gain points? that is just insane to me
Also let us give credit where it is due to RBA he deserved his win.
I also agree 100% with Rafanboy we expect too much from these players, like Medvedev,Sasher,Thiem,Stefenos etc they are not in the class of Federer,Nadal and Novak.
You cannot teach 'the want in any player' it has to be there from the get go or it comes with victories, winning breeds success and also the want to achieve more.I understand your point wanting to see these players step up when the opportunity presents,so far with some of these players it is not there,I saw the Tsitspas earlier today, again he had a great chance pass him by,he did the same thing against Sasha a week ago,he was leading 5-1 and then went on a mental walkabout.....in the 1st set.I know we should not compare them to Roger,Nadal and Novak, yes we have been spoilt by these 3 men.I'm not saying he tanked the match, but that he tanked a few points when he got frustrated. Here’s the thing Moxie: Medvedev before this tournament was doing well even with the abysmal performance at the AO Final this year. So yes, it looked bad that he might have tank the match against RBA, but he was still playing well overall. Remember, he almost lost to Popyrin but fought through the match.I'm not saying he tanked the match, but that he tanked a few points when he got frustrated. Agreed that you can't teach the "want." For all of their talents, I think we have to say that another thing that the Big 3 had was also the ambition. The Want. If the players coming up are not as talented as the future hall of famers in that they block their options, then the ambition, the wanting of it is going to become the x-factor. So I'm looking or the players that are wanting it, that have the focus and the x-factor. Rublev seems to be one, Sinner has great focus and maturity, and I think Korda does. I'm not counting out Meddie or Tsitsipas, (though I'm about to sell on Zverev,) but I am looking for that focus and ambition, and who's got it.You cannot teach 'the want in any player' it has to be there from the get go or it comes with victories, winning breeds success and also the want to achieve more.I understand your point wanting to see these players step up when the opportunity presents,so far with some of these players it is not there,I saw the Tsitspas earlier today, again he had a great chance pass him by,he did the same thing against Sasha a week ago,he was leading 5-1 and then went on a mental walkabout.....in the 1st set.I know we should not compare them to Roger,Nadal and Novak, yes we have been spoilt by these 3 men.
I will also sell Sasha....I saw a little bit of hope late last year when Ferrer was coaching him....until he finds some type of consistency,I will sell him to the lowest bidder....Just watching the Rublev v Korda match now.Agreed that you can't teach the "want." I agree about Sinner and possibly Korda about having the x-factor. As for Rublev, I might hold off a little bit just because he has not won a single ATP Masters 1000 crown and he has not reached a Slam SF yet...Agreed that you can't teach the "want." You are generous, and I am less generous. I get that. The players do play within what is given to them, but there is the option to train hard, and to care a lot. Let's see who works harder and cares more, going forward. Here’s the thing Moxie: Medvedev before this tournament was doing well even with the abysmal performance at the AO Final this year. So yes, it looked bad that he might have tank the match against RBA, but he was still playing well overall. Remember, he almost lost to Popyrin but fought through the match.
Same as Tsitsipas, he is playing well so far in 2021. The only difference is that he hasn’t won a title yet but he reached the Acapulco final.
While I understand that you want the next gen players to have full ambition and want to have the will to win, they are still humans at the end of the day. There will be days where they might not feel like playing completely hard due to different reasons but as long they consistently reach the QFs and later rounds of a major tournament, they will be fine.
If there is one player, I can complain is Thiem. Yes, he might have some injuries, but he has not really played well after winning the US Open. Now, to me that is frustrating and interesting to see as a tennis fan for a player not to play well after winning a slam.
