Fed's match was scheduled for 12 EDT (6 p.m. local time) when I checked yesterday. Now, I am all getting ready to see it only to learn that he has already lost. :cry

JMDP is currently ranked at 166. Assuming, he is healed he should be able to get into top 50 by the end of the year and be a seeded player beginning at RG17.

It's actually an optimal result, really. It gives Federer a chance to play against a high caliber performance, and do pretty well, and it also gives Thiem a much needed boost in confidence as he continues to develop.

I was actually very impressed with Thiem at the net he is decent. If he can find someone to work with him on his court positioning, he could really develop into a nasty player for anyone to encounter. His court positioning leaves him open for unnecessary errors and for his opponents to have an easier time hitting winners at times.

So far he's fulfilling his promise unlike others like Grigor D.! Theim has won a few events and taken out Rafa, now Roger! If only the rest of this next generation would start realizing their potential and do the same! Kei's been the best of late, but he still can't stay on the court more than a couple months without breaking down! What's up with that? He lifts his shirt and he appears "ripped," but seems to do no good! :puzzled :nono :cover

Kei hasn't anywhere near enough muscle and is marginally bigger than David Goffin who is like a stick. Murray was the same before and bulking up his calves and quads helped him a lot. Thiem on the other hand has a very strong frame already and will have a much better career as a result I reckon.

Final: Austria v. Germany with battling one handed backhands.

It is a rematch of the Munich final, where Kphli prevailed.

What about Vesely, he is not anything to you? he is not any promise? he took out Novak been this last one on his best form and not like Thiem to Rafa and Roger playing their worst :D

Jiri Vesely is 9-12 (.429) won/loss this year and 49-66 (.426) for his career.

Thiem is 41-11 (.788) this year and 105-69 (.603) for his career.

There is a lot to say about a consistent winning percentage as opposed to an upset win over a top player.

Something's got to be pointed to so Nole's season can be undercut ever so slightly in comparison to 2011 & 2015! These detractors can point to that match to say "they thought the big decline had begun!" It's sad! :lolz: :cover

Who thought the big decline has begun? I just say that I give more credit to Vesely beating to someone in his best form than Thiem to someone in his worst :cover

And I am saying that the year to date won/loss record and the career won/loss record is of far greater value in determining the quality of a player, than some journeyman who got lucky to face the world's best on an off day.

I hate how people are trying to discredit Thiem. Was Federer at his best? No, but he was far from his worst. He had two match points to take this match, and he didn't. If he was at his worst, he wouldn't have had those match points.

Seems that was mostly Carol as apparently Nadal has been playing his worst whenever he loses but she said Federer was at his worst in her post too. No, I agree, Federer didn't play that badly at all and I give Thiem full credit as his power from the baseline is enough to rattle anyone and Federer has had a hard time with big hitters since the 2009 USO loss to Del Potro. I think a sharper, less rusty Federer may well have just served an ace when he had the 2 match points though :) But very impressed by Thiem and delighted to see him at #7 in the live rankings. Gladly wave goodbye to some of the hasbeens in the top 10.

I think more than likely what cost Fed the match was coming back from baked goods territory to a tiebreaker. I would be a bit dejected to have fought all the way back to a tiebreak only to lose said tiebreak. We have seen it happen with Fed's matches with Djokovic where he fights hard to get to a certain point of the match and then he blinks.

Yeah, that happens a lot. When players lose a very close TB set they often end up playing hideously in the final set. At least 6-4 in the 3rd is respectable.

Nobody discredits Thiem, he is good but when he wins a MS then I will change my mind but beating a player that has played three or four matches since January and playing his WORST I thing he is overrated.
Hey Front, Nadal had nothing to do with my comment but now that you have said that I remember.....he was playing his best too LOL
