Matches you recommend watching in the absence of live tennis??

Hows about this final , played on this day 36 years ago (june 10 1984) , starring arch rivals John McEnroe versus Ivan Lendl. This was put up on the official Roland Garros YT channel and does not include any french audio.
Match of two halves where McEnroe appeared to be cruising for the first 1hr 40 minutes and just a matter of time before he would win on clay.
It's no excuse, but I seem to recall a cameraman agitating him which causes him to lose his concentration in the third set and also the crowds was cheering Lendl. Was it just Lendl upped his game as the final wore on or did McEnroe's level dropped or tired out?
But definitely one that got away from Mac in what was an otherwise stellar year.

Enjoy folks. We may never see tennis of this calibre ever again.

These were days when a single match just about "killed" a guy! It was reported that Ivan thought this match just about "did him in;" esp. for the rest of 1984! He got to finals and wasn't necessarily upset early, but he wasn't getting thru Connors and McEnroe when he literally owned them a couple years before! It wasn't until the USO the following season that it all came back together for him, defeating John in the '85 final in straights!

Oh , do you remember this ? DO YOU RECALL THIS ??? !!!!!

I vaguely recall seeing it in 1983 and finished around two in the morning on a monday (AU time) and then bludging off school the next day as i was very sleepy, hehe.:face-with-tears-of-joy:

Awesome attacking dazzling tennis by Yannik NOAH and if memory serves me well , Mats was the defending champion and had beaten John McEnroe in the quarter final that year. He was also considered the favorite to win by most commentators.

Final score, Noah defeats Wilander, 6-2,7-5,7-6. The frenchman's finest hour. Shame he never won another GS but i think he was extremely unlucky and became plagued with one injury after another, didn't he ?

Can't believe all 4 top seeds lost QF; even if lame US HC mainstays like McEnroe & Connors! Hard to believe they were even seeded that high!

Yes i recall it like it was yesterday. Connors defeat to some unknown french player was the biggest surprise of the quarters.

Tennis Channel is replaying Murray d. Djokovic 2013 Wimbledon Final. While not an especially fine Djoker, it was a very fine Andy, and a big win for him and British tennis.

Wow, TBH, I remembered that match as going 4 sets. That's how much I was sure that Novak would turn things around. That 3rd set was a big battle, and the last game was brutal.

There’s nothing special about a match between 2 servebots. :sleep2:
Actually..they had some magnificent rallies. If the replay challenge call was available, Sampras would have won that match. I give Roger a lot of credit to be able to raise his game to be so competitive against Peter

Sampras is the only person I have seen of Greek heritage that could be labeled as the Greek God..not Tsitsipas

Pistol Pete, the greatest grasscourt player I had the pleasure of watching in my lifetime. It was uncanny in Wimbledon how he could pull out a big serve almost at will.

Too bad he ran into a foil of his; Richard Krajicek! That wasn't as much an upset in '96 really since Richard overall had some wins on fast HC services over Pete! Sampras might have gone on to win a streak for the ages (at the time), but was capped at 7 Wimbledons! My fave on grass has to be Stefan Edberg (just damn cuter) even though Pete more solid with that 1st serve!

That was just a bad day at the office for Peter the Great or King Sampras

I will never get over Stefan Edberg’s 1991 SF Loss to Michael Stich At Wimbledon. That damn score is imbedded in my brain. 6-4, 6-7, 6-7, 6-7. Stefan lost the match without ever having his serve broken. Stefan I think lost only 10 or 11 points on his serve through the first 2 sets , for goodness sake. In the 3rd set Tie breaker at 5-6 he missed a gimmee volley.

But I’m not bitter.

That's one of those scoring anomalies of tennis! You can actually lose a match when winning more points and in Stefan's case, never losing his serve! Not sure he would have gone on to defeat Becker in the final though! They had been swapping Wimbledon victories and were going for 4 in a row! Edberg was overall Boris' b!tch even though he won 2 of the 3 Wimbledon finals they had played! Stich happened to be "in the zone" and played out of his mind to straight set Becker! He actually played well enough to reach #2 in the World IIRC! Michael had a real ax to grind with Becker, but he wasn't the only German who did! Finishing Becker off in '91 is something that he can never take away from him! :yahoo:
