1980! NYC, Borg dismantled the child Lendl in straights. Lendl was learning fast and a few months later almost exposed Borg on clay. Took a while for the shrieking kid Lendl to mature but he packed a wallop. Borg, in 1980, was as great a player who ever lived...

...and? What's your point?

My point was obvious, considering Ferrer no chance to win a single match in London is bogus, when he has defeated all but Federer.
Federer being in the other group, his chances are even better.
Actually he has a lead over Wawrinka: 7-6 in their H2H and defeated Murray and Nadal each 6 times in his career.
That being said, I am not predicting he surely will win matches, because this year he has not been in the best form, being ranked only 7, but he has some chances.

This could officially be the most successful poll I've seen on TF since I joined. :snicker Where are the Murray, Nishikori, Berdych, Ferrer fans?

They've been sick waiting for a big win; of any kind! Murray should have been doing so much more; allowing "gramps" to school him time and time again in their biggest matches with the world watching! How embarrassing for all concerned! :cover :puzzled :nono  :dodgy:

Nah, I'm very happy with the way Murray has performed this year. Hope he can make the SF here and win the Davis Cup in a couple of weeks. Not sure about anyone else though. But by your standards, everyone would be miserable because this season has been one big Djokovic coronation party with a flash of brilliance by Wawrinka. The rest of us are scrambling around for the miserable gutless crumbs I guess. ;)

Like I said, we'll have to agree to disagree. All the arguments and discussions haven't changed my mind. It's a 5th major in my book.

Your book is obviously fiction... :snicker

And wishes :D

Given that Roger could not dispose of (an inclining) Rafa [in quick two sets], I don't see much chance of him winning the event. But, I hope he reaches the finals.

I see the opposite. Despite their being in the same group, I still think it will be a Novak/Roger final, since they're both likely to beat their opponents in the SFs. On this surface, I don't see Djokovic or Federer losing to anyone in the Nastase group.

Exactly! The ATP can throw all the points that they want to at this glorified round robin, and it still won't rise to the level of a major.

- It's not a best of five set format
- It's not played over two weeks with the top 32 players in the draw.
- You can lose and still actually win (Novak would have loved that format at the French)
- It's at the end of the year when most of the players are tired, injured, burned out, or focused on Davis Cup finals. :snicker (Last one added for Murray fans).

I agree with all of your points.

What does everyone think of making the final a best-of-five set match, like it used to be? I know the ATP developed an allergy to best-of-five after the '06 Rome final, but I think they should make an exception for the World Tour Final's final.

Why does it have to be the same criteria to be in the same class as a major? Who made up that rule? Round Robin, 3-sets (which I have always liked better), one bad day doesn't destroy your chances, indoor, Nadal has never won, all of these are unique to Slams. (CSorry, couldn't resist that last one :snicker) When the players start they all play under the same rules and conditions. Why does it have to be 12-player field, 5-sets and on clay? The WTF is a unique tournament that is fun to watch and definitely the fifth biggest tournament of the year.

My sympathies now lie with the alternate Frenchman, Richard Gasquet (not in the poll).
I hope Gasquet would replace someone early enough to make it through the round robin and win it all.

Vive la France!

Mournfully,

Because to be in the same class as a major, it needs to have the same criteria. If it's different, it's not the same.

Not gonna agree with that. Even in the majors, the courts are different, the way they use tie breaks are different. Does that make the USO not a major because it uses 5th set tie breaks? Who draws the line of what the grand slam criteria is and what isn't? The tour has set the tournament up as a major tournament, the players accept it as a major tournament, so why can't some of the fans? Like I said before, we're just gonna have to agree to disagree.

I think so, especially that there's a novel aspect to this event anyway. A best of five final wouldn't kill anyone. They got rid of the five setters after Fedal battered themselves to a pulp once, right? And skipped Hamburg? But that was a once off. And this has no big event starting the next day. I dunno why they don't make the final a five setter...

I'm sure we'll all agree to disagree when you cease making totally baseless claims about it. :lolz:

That's right. After the five-set '06 Rome final, Rafa and Roger both pulled out of Hamburg. Within a year or so the ATP eliminated best-of-five set finals.

And this has no big event starting the next day. I dunno why they don't make the final a five setter...

Exactly. There's nothing until the next year, so why not finish the season with a big final?

I made no baseless claims, like yours above. You're hilarious on this one. You haven't invested millions in the event and are trying to big it up, no? It's doing fine, don't worry! :snicker
