I never heard of his opponent, he’s young and keen? This kid overpowered him, with *heavy*, fearless hitting.

LOL. I wouldn't go quite that far. There are still a couple of outliers in the draw.Congrats to Novak for his 7th Rome Masters!
I’d never heard of him either. He’s a qualifier, so used to the conditions, but still …I never heard of his opponent, he’s young and keen?
Sure, Rune and Sinner (in particular) are still there, but more than anything, they’re going to have to mentally bring it against Novak.LOL. I wouldn't go quite that far. There are still a couple of outliers in the draw.
And Meddy on the other side. If this was Djoke from Wimby or the tour finals, I would agree. But he hasn't looked all that swift on the clay this year. I see an opportunity for someone to step up.Sure, Rune and Sinner (in particular) are still there, but more than anything, they’re going to have to mentally bring it against Novak.
They said this was his first time to make a main draw ATP event. He's only been playing challengers. 23 years old. He was just about perfect today. Never let Carlos get into any kind of a rhythm. Carlos has been starting a bit slow of late, so that might be the lesson he learned today. Don't expect everyone to just back off and give you time. Marozsan played calm, smart tennis. And drop shotted CA like a thousand times. He's got a really nice one. I was pretty shocked that Carlos didn't win that TB, but you can't really say he played poorly today, just nothing special. It was all the Hungarian.I’d never heard of him either. He’s a qualifier, so used to the conditions, but still …
I am, too, but as @kskate2 put it, he had a few mental brain farts which cost him the match. What was he thinking with that failed drop shot which essentially handed his opponent the match?!I was pretty shocked that Carlos didn't win that TB, but you can't really say he played poorly today, just nothing special. I know, but that was one point, and the guy had been pressuring him the whole match.I am, too, but as @kskate2 put it, he had a few mental brain farts which cost him the match. What was he thinking with that failed drop shot which essentially handed his opponent the match?!
I didn't say he played a poor match, just a poor TB. He was up 4-1 and then didn't win another point after that. So it isn't all about the brain fart dropshot, but the way he played those 6 straight points. It's indicative of a larger issue I mentioned earlier. He has trouble w/ these big hitters and he hasn't quite figured out how to slay them. The tour is taking notes. They saw what Jannik did in Miami and how he struggled in Madrid despite winning the title. He should expect more matches like today and he needs to be ready to problem solve.I know, but that was one point, and the guy had been pressuring him the whole match.

Exactly. For goodness sake, the kid just turned twenty has 2 Masters & 1 500 so far this year and is back to #1 in the ranking. His opponent played very well to beat him, the sky is not falling !I've been saying Carlito's playing too much! He defended back to back tourneys (Barc. & Madrid) so I'm not that shocked! Better here than in Paris!
This is ridiculous, Tiafoe got screwed here and is down a break in 3rd because they favor an italian player who was in a momentum. While on the other court where Sonego just lost a set they stopped a play. Very bad decision making from the officials. I hope Big Foe wins.Tiafoe getting F Over by the Italian tournament officials playing in a downpour and muddy conditions.

Well he had every right to speak up..He's going nowhere on clay! He's truly wasting his time w/ such a dour, sourpuss carriage when playing on red dirt! I miss the days of specialists!
Tossip I would be very surprised if any play re starts all the courts now have plastic covers on themWell he had every right to speak up..
