So far he hasn't disappointed; winning Next Gen Masters/YEC, upsets Novak, etc.! He's making a name for himself! :yesyes: :p
I'm impressed with Chung performance. If we lose Djoko, don't worry Chung is about to replace him. Chung has almost exactly the same game style, minus silly ball bouncing while serving (which is the aspect of Novak that I hate most), minus rusty labouring grunts (that are sometimes directed at ball boys (!) and became even louder recently). Chung has done excellent job by learning the game style of his idol but bringing in his own on-court behaviour which is much much more graceful. I feel like he's going to reach the top 10 quickly now. He's already beaten his idol in AO, next big challenge is Fed in QF here (because I think Fed's R16 match will be a cakewalk) that looks interesting now, if Chung is free of blisters. Of course Fed knows this game style from his rivalry with Novak and says he's not difficult for him but nonetheless he had some trouble with Novak lately. No Novak in his comeback since 2017 yet, no worries: there is Novak's young version instead!

He’s also a good example of how we can’t really tell how good a young player is going to be as a teenager. If I remember correctly, Chung did really well on the Challenger circuit a couple years and reached around #50 at age 20, but then struggled on the ATP and gradually fell back. But he jumped forward - perhaps partially because of confidence gained by winning Milan.

I remember very well, a few years ago there were 4 teenagers coming up in the top 100: Coric, Kokkinakis Chung and Zverev. And now look how different trajectories each of their career took. Zverev took off and rose to the top, but now he struggles and will likely fall. Coric flattened out for 2 years + in the 40-60 range. Chung fell back for a while, then rebounded . Now he is the best of the 4, Kokkinakis career sadly was compromised by an injury.

Good win for Chung, and good to see Coric back to playing well. Fritz lost to Coric, but put up a very good fight, so nice to see him back, too.

The very handsome and ever-unpredictable Jeremy Chardy. *sigh* He always messes up my draw. I don't see him winning today. Did anyone see Will Farrell doing commentary before the match? That was hilarious.

Chardie coughs up a DF at a crucial moment, to make Fed lead 6-5. I think from now on it will be one way traffic.

Chardy not going away yet. Though it would be preferable if he didn't put so many shots into the net.

Yep, Chardy is not going away. But, hopefully he will DF again at the end at a crucial moment. :lol6:

Clean match by Fed today, although it was not easy. Fed had positive differential and was never faced BP. Won by virtue of a single break at the end in both sets.

Three more matches to go. Most probably against, Chung, Anderson and Delpo.

Fed will play tomorrow against Chung and then will have Friday off and then two consecutive matches on sat and sun.

Chardy served well, which kept him close. I don't think it was Roger's best serving pct. Did you see what it was?

Roger had only 51% first serve in. But, when it went in, he won all of those points. Needs to improve.

I think Chung will give him a hard time. Frankly, I didn't think Chardy would be this much trouble.

I haven't seen it but looking at the stats:
https://bnpparibasopen.com/score-center/match-detail/?match=MS008
100% 1st serve and an incredible 79% of 2nd serve won, no DF, tell different story. Fed was incredibly solid on his serve. IMO, 1st serve % is not necessarily a measure of serving confidence but rather serving strategy. You can even go for broke (ace or nothing) because you have 2nd as a backup or you back off a bit securing your 1st percentage because e.g. you know the opponent successfully goes after your second. Fed has chosen the first strategy, because Chardy couldn't make even the smallest dent in his serve.
The rest of the stats also show how dominant Fed was in this match: 59% of points, never faced a BP. I don't think you can say this round was any trouble for Fed.
