In matches like these, where there's not much between them you have to take every advantage given. He didn't because he makes some boneheaded decisions

I don't think he made a lot of bone-headed decisions. What would you say he did that he should have done differently?

I'd have to go back and watch it, but there was a between the legs shot in the first set and then at least one DF in the TB. DF in TB is a nono

The tweener was Sock's and Lopez still won the point. And a DF isn't the kiss of death if you get past it. Feli did, and he won the match. Go back if you like, but it was a fairly even match.

Whatever you think of that match, the stronger opponent, at least on paper (Sock #10), lost. Another top 10 out. That leaves only 3 top-20 players (Fed, Anderson & Delpo) among last 16 draw. Sam is #21 but the rest are in the #30-40 and some even around #100 mark. If not for Fed, that draw would resemble more of a challenger tour rather than the best of M1000.
Have you seen any weaker draw at this level in recent years or is it unprecedented? At a minimum, it appears all top players (not just Big 4) do experience some serious dip, except Fed of course.

I get your pint, but you exagerate obviously comparing the field left with Challenger level.
There are the most 3 players left who qualifies for the Challenger category out of the last 16.
But I am not surprised, since the USO last year we experience similar results in slams as well. You may remember that at the AO, Edmund and Chung, who were ranked around 50-55, made the SF.
IW now is no different, like anything could happen. This is the current state of the ATP, and we have to accept it. I think is actually more exciting, because is less predictable.

Marcos is suddenly doing level. For a while it appeared that he was getting ready to retire. Then he started playing challengers and so on. Now, he is in R16. But, have not watched him play though.

Considering the current state of the men's field, and that Juan Martin is finally healthy, fingers crossed, he finds a way to win a master title, which is missing in his portfolio.

So far he hasn't disappointed; winning Next Gen Masters/YEC, upsets Novak, etc.! He's making a name for himself! :yesyes: :p
Absolutely. He is one of the best Next. Generation players .

He’s also a good example of how we can’t really tell how good a young player is going to be as a teenager. If I remember correctly, Chung did really well on the Challenger circuit a couple years and reached around #50 at age 20, but then struggled on the ATP and gradually fell back. But he jumped forward - perhaps partially because of confidence gained by winning Milan.

I don't take too much in the great Djokovic, losing he is recovering from injury, Djokovic will be back to number one by the end of next year.
