Very optimistic, Moxie. How about this:

0 Pessimistic
1 Realistic
2 Optimistic
3 Wildly optimistic
4 Insane

Optimistic is my middle name. I don't completely disagree with your temperature gauge, though, perhaps I would go this:

0 Pessimistic
1 Realistic
2 Optimistic
3 Should loads of things fall into place
4 Unlikely

Not vastly different, but, remember, we've been hearing "should things fall into place" for Roger, too. I don't think it's unfair of me to stick it in there. And we can arm-wrestle, if you like, over "insane" v. "unlikely" for the 4th.

Understood, but in my case, 0 means optimistic. ;)

Is there any way to subtract a few?

If you ask a few classic posters here, yes. But that would to be wallowing in the rivers of regret and denial. Otherwise, you're left with "zero!" as an option. Sorry. (And who added the exclamation point, since it wasn't lacatch?"

Yes, but only if you add the slams he didn't play and would have won, so it balances out ;)

Since 2005, Nadal has missed:

2006 Australian Open (foot injury)
2009 Wimbledon (knees)
2012 U.S. Open (knee)
2014 U. S. Open (wrist injury)

He would have won those if he had participated, of course.

And AO 2013. He would have surely beaten Djokovic there. :D

You missed Australian Open 2013. That's 5 slams.

Realistically, Rafa is on 19 slams. I'll be generous to Haychew and subtract 3 like he demanded, but I'll also award Rafa the 2004 FO, which he would have won had he participated, leaving him on 17, making him the co-GOAT, but really, the GOAT due to the h2h advantage.

After the many times I've seen Nadal come back from 'injur(y/ies)', this year I stated (early) that it feels very different. Maybe there is a little "magic" left somewhere that he can pull out of his bag, but I think Rafa finishes with 14 and tied with Pete. If that does prove to be the case, then in the "all time" race, I would put Pete ahead of Ralf for his six consecutive years finishing at #1.

Ah, just having some fun. Actually I was a bit surprised that is was only five Slams that he missed. Seemed like more for some reason.

And maybe it's his style of play, but I never felt that Nadal had an easy Slam win. It seems like he always had to beat the best to bite down on the trophy. He earned every one of those 14.

You're going to miss him when he's gone, bro. Ten years from now we'll all miss Fedal. They became a single word, you can take your own meaning from it...
