We don't know what is going on in his life either, maybe his experience this year was overwhelming for him even though it wasn't for some.

We don't know what's going on in anyone's life. We never knew with Borg, or Mats, aged 17. We don't know with Nick. He should take his rest if he needs it. His mental health is most important...

Not everyone is Rafa, who was blasting along at 17-19. But he had his uncle as his coach, and Moya as his mentor, for ballast. I don't think the value of that should be underestimated for a teenager being thrown into the thick of big money tennis. Nick is probably getting hit up from all sides by sponsors, and the Aussie press wanting to know if he's the next Hewitt. If he's feeling overwhelmed and distracted, I don't think that's unfair, or speaks poorly of him to take it a little slowly. I have no idea what his support systems are like.

Listen, if he's overwhelmed in September about being "the next Hewitt" then this guy isn't the next Sampras, or even Djokovic - or even Courier...

Nadal2005RG: This is exactly the kind of comment that gives you a bad reputation around here.

1) It says nothing.

2) It implies your resentment to Kyrgios because he beat Nadal at Wimbledon.

3) It's mean-spirited. You're making fun of a 19-year-old kid, having the year of his career, thrust into the spotlight, with no empathy to him needing a potential mental-health break.

4) If there is an underlying reason, it could be because he's playing ITPL, and you are the only one that's championing that.

There are plenty of ways for you to make useful contributions to the conversation, but your default seems to resist all of them.

tented warned me about people like you, and that "You may want to note that you're from Australia. That will give your post a different effect. Kind of a 'laughing with you' not 'laughing at you' difference."

See here in a Australia everybody that I've heard speak about Kyrgios and Barty are laughing at the situation. It is not in any way mean-spirited to say "Aussie Aussie Aussie, withdraw withdraw withdraw" instead of "Aussie Aussie Aussie, Oy Oy Oy". Its called a j-o-k-e.

The irony is, 99% of my posts are tennis analysis. I probably joke less than any poster whose ever posted on this forum. I also never speak rudely toward other posters.

If you want to see mean-spirited, just look at the 50 or so posts degrading me for posting positively about Nadal :laydownlaughing

There is no way 99% of your posts are tennis analysis. They're annoying Nadal is best and Federer sucks posts most of the time. That's not analysis. You actually joke more than you realize btw :snigger Try reading your posts as if you weren't a Nadal fan and you'll see what I mean. In fact, your posts make many Nadal fans here embarrassed such as claiming he's had a "perfect year" (how could anyone sane claim that?!) and making progress at Wimbledon.

Maybe it is just not his time, right now, maybe he is planning for future. If he has a really break out year next year, would you then consider that his decision was wise?

Maybe you just like going against Moxie and me on this.

No, I'd never "just go against " you and Moxie. :nono

I don't mind Nick taking a rest, but I'm surprised at the reasons. Not 100% surprised, but still surprised. I have high hopes for Nick, but I never heard of one single great player who became so sensitive after one or two good results. Not ever. Not 17 year olds, or 18 years olds, or 19 year olds. Not Becker when the whole world descended on him.

Could be Nick will be the greatest of them all. Could be, he learns from this and develops and wins 2 majors next year. But I can only judge it on what I see and what I have seen in the past, and this surprised me, I must admit...

He could well be. Grass seems to be definitely the most likely place he'll win a slam based on his serve imo but he's had his 2nd best slam result to date at the USO and those were the 2 slams Hewitt won. He's still only 19 and definitely has a bright future.

RE: General tennis news

Fair points, Kieran, I understand what you mean by comparing his situation with other players'.

I really don't have an opinion about Nick and how great he can be yet, but I honestly can say that not too many things surprise me. I guess it comes from being forced to "face anything" in the past.

That said I wish you good night as I have to leave:D

I've never said Federer sucks. That's a word you guys like to use. That and "goat".

Since last year I have been forecasting that Nadal's best shot at Wimbledon would be 2015 because there will be an extra week between the French Open and Wimbledon. So making the 4th round in 2014 was as good as we could expect, because it got Nadal some grasscourt matches/confidence which he can build on in 2015 when he has time to better recover from clay. And he actually played extremely well on grass this year, but was outgunned by the Kyrgios zone.

And Nadal's year is also perfect because he's been able to rest during the most damaging time of all - the never-ending hardcourt season which goes from August-lateMarch.
I've always preached that Nadal needs to reduce the number of hardcourt events, and that what happened in 2012 should be the norm eventually.
I've also spoken of how important the Double-Career-Grand-Slam is, so why would he need the US Open and Wimbledon? But I'd also want to see him play some events toward the end of the year, because you don't want to enter Doha/Australia having not played on hardcourts since lateMarch.
So playing the World Tour Finals and another indoor event or 2, is perfect (plus he's never won the World Tour Finals, and he's made the final twice, so its worthwhile).

Anyway, you don't want to hear about the positive things in Nadal's year.....

Tented is my partner in this endeavor, and he wouldn't be warning you about "people like" me. He was trying to steer you onto a reasonable path of conversation, which is, apparently not your strong suit to conceptualize. BTW, everyone gets the joke...it's just not funny.

99% of your posts are NOT tennis analysis. The majority are fannish and involve you clapping for your own point.

Okay, well I certainly took it as a warning of how people such as Moxie would perceive it.

I warned you that it could be misinterpreted -- yes, that's true -- but I didn't warn you against specific individuals, which is what you're implying.

The only positive thing for Nadal this year really of note was winning the French Open and you know it. Nadal has no knee problems for quite some time now so missing the US Open is not perfect unless you're a raving lunatic. Not being able to compete properly in the AO final was not perfect, not making the 2nd week of Wimbledon was not perfect. You should really look up the definition of perfect online. You say why would Nadal need Wimbledon or the US Open? Why do you think? It's 2 more slams. Duh. Ministry of the bleedin' obvious.

Winning nothing but RG every year is not perfect despite what you may think, the diversity of winning other slams is a lot better. Sure the AO would be great for him but there a lot of potential obstacles now standing in the way and not playing for months isn't the way to go about winning it except in your own "perfect" world. As I said, the one and pretty much only perfect thing for Nadal this year (by his standards) was winning the French Open and you know it. The rest did not work out as planned.

For the record, I don't think anyone's poor perception of you has anything to do with your being from Australia. And it's not aided by your paltry attempts to sew divisions. Tented was trying to help you in finding some humor about yourself. We have been trying to find a way to fit you in. You seem to resist.

Yeah, sure hope so. Hopefully he'll train and practice more than he parties in the extended break till January though!

RE: General tennis news

nick k has been probably taken by surprise at how quickly he rose up..he had to qualify for a challenger pre wimby then wins the title (8 matches??) then before he knows it he has beaten the world no1 at wimby on centr court and reached a major QF.

add in all the media hubbub into the mix and its prob a good idea to take a step back.

Yup, exactly. Tons of undue harsh comments on tennis.com, mostly from Nadal fans claiming all he did all year was beat him. He's done plenty more all year than that one match and the one against Gasquet was much tougher and his first huge win. Not like he's gonna lose many points so as long as he's recharged for 2015 it's all good. That said I was hoping to see how he fared in the next few months of the year so bit disappointed to have to wait till 2015 to see him play again. Besides that IPTL crap of course.
