I guess by GSM's definition, any time a tennis player shows skill we can call him Federer.

1. The definition is not my definition, it is dictionary's definition.

2. I have often heard commentators use the term that shot was Federeresque
when a player comes up with a brilliant shot. I am not sure whether
"federesque" is a legitimate word in English yet. But, given his greatness
I would not be surprised if one day (if not already) it officially enters
the dictionary.

It's kinda difficult to 'form a mental image of the word "Hitler"' without seeing a funny moustache, tragic trains heading to concentration camps and monstrous war unjustly visited on Europe.

Of course, there's a dictionary somewhere that suggests something less brutal, but that's hardly the first thing we do when we think of Hitler - reach for the dictionary and see what it means...

It is not about some dictionary somewhere. Most dictionaries have that meaning associated
with the word.

Also, it is not about one going to the dictionary to search for the meaning of this word.
This kind of words get introduced in the dictionary in that sense only after it has been
used widely by many and then the dictionary finally deciding to officially recognize that.

The problem is you have a certain perspective and you think it is the only right perspective
contrary to valid evidence.

I think we need a baseline of civility for dealing with these objections, though. It's not on to be calling anyone names like this, particularly this, then hiding behind a fricking dictionary - which I'll confess, was a touch! :laydownlaughing

I think baseline of civility should start with not calling fellow posters racists without any
basis, which you explicitly did. People who live in glass houses should not throw stones.

Sorry, but this is ridiculous. Jerk and idiot, are also in the dictionary, but we refrain from using them because it's considered "name calling". Hitler is also name calling, for someone who is acting dictatorial.

I understand you're ticked because you got shut down by an admin, but it's time to let it go. You've made your point.

1. The point that I was trying to make was that my connotation of the word
Hitler has nothing to do with racism, Nazis, Swastik, trains etc and has only
to do with dictatorial tendencies.
2. I did accuse her of acting in a dictatorial manner and am neither denying it,
hiding from it or backing away from it.
3. I can show you so many posts in this forum where one poster calls another
poster an idiot. I myself have been called idiot a few times in these forums.
I will be happy to provide samples if you want proof. We don't live in an utopia.
It happens and I get over it.

GSM, I also get what you mean. But believe me, and nehmeth, when we tell you: there is no purpose in discussing such things with admins any further. You made you point, it's time to move on, you are not winning the argument. I mean this in the friendliest way possible. You can take it or leave it.:D

You can call someone an elephant, then say that you don't mean they are huge, nor that they have a long nose, neither do you mean they're wrinkly.... but that they are just a little gray.

When you call them an elephant people see an elephant.

And when you call someone Hitler, everyone still sees the maniac that tortured and murdered millions of people no matter how you say otherwise. And you know it.

^^ And when you call somebody a piggy face? Somehow it does not sound like a compliment I think, even though I like so many pork delicacies :laydownlaughing

Raonic is a player not a poster. C'mon, he has a snout like a pig's. And a good plastic surgeon could remedy that... :puzzled ....given six to twelve hours.

You are missing the elephant in the room; a word has many different connotations.

When someone talks about missing an elephant in the room, the only attribute
of importance is the hugeness (elephant being obviously identifiable due to
its hugeness) and no one imagines the grayness, wrinkleness or the
long nose of the elephant in this context for example.

Finally, you can stop acting as though you can read minds and making remarks
such as "you know it".

The whole of your post above is based on your refusal to admit the second
connotation of the word as described in the dictionary. Just because you refuse
to admit a certain connotation does not mean that such connotation is not
in vogue.

^^^ Lame. When you say elephant in that context, people will think of a big, grey, wrinkly trunked behemoth in the room.

You keep posting about the same "connotation" over and over and over and over. We get it.

I made the one post showing how a word carries a picture with it, no matter how many times you try to limit it to the "connotation" that you picked.
