Actually, that my also be one of the reason why he did not release his schedule.
Actually, Roger has to simultaneously deal with all the seven issues mentioned below.

1. General aging and 1/2 step slow issue
2. Back ache issue
3. Racquet Change issue
4. Coach Change issue
5. deal with New Baby issues
6. Ranking Trouble issue
7. Scheduling Vows

That is a full plate of issues all at the same time. If anyone can handle them
all, it will be Federer.

^ That's a good call, GSM, as to why he might be coy about his up-coming schedule, and also thanks for laying out what all the issues are currently on his plate. I would add potential new coach.

Allow me a bit of further speculation here: Most people hesitate to make a pregnancy public before the end of the first trimester. That would mean a baby is due around June/July. If that's correct, then Mirka becomes less available from early May(?). I would think he would, then, be very interested in having someone else around that he trusts. I know Mirka isn't his coach, but she is certainly the stalwart in his corner. Maybe this Edberg thing will have legs, at least for the near future.

I already mentioned the coach issue.

Most probably the baby will be due sometime between Wimbledon and USO.
Edberg deal looks like a far from done deal. I would not be surprised, no matter which
way Edberg deal ends.

According to Severin Luthi's statement of today, the 27th Dec. "Roger will play a
FULL SCHEDULE in 2014". No further details given. The statement was made in the
context of coach announcement.

Federer also announces that he will use 98" head size racquet in Australia.

http://www.tennis.com/pro-game/2013/12/federer-play-larger-racquet-2014/50068/#.Ur3RQGB3uM8

Apparently, it is a different model than the one he used in Hamburg even though
the head size is same.

Federer says it is unlikely that he will play in Belgrade in the 1st round of DC.
See interview posted in another thread.

Cheers for posting that, Murat. Probably knows he may not get many points in clay court season so Indian Wells and Miami offer the chance at a few there. Good break anyway from Miami to Madrid. Pretty busy schedule for a guy pushing 33 next summer all the same. Guess he means business and knows he needs to get that ranking up pronto.

That's a fairly committed schedule, given that he has a third child on the way. But I admire this commitement. I think that when he withdraws his labour, he suffers. He needs to play more and if he gets off to a flier, who knows? Those two HC springtime MS tourneys maybe a bit much, but nobody's expecting any player to win both of them...

Thanks for posting this Murat. I was travelling last few days and did not follow the
developments. His schedule includes all the 16 tournaments that I anticipated in my
OP and throws in Miami in addition.

I am glad that he did publish his schedule (even though with the caveat that
it might change) before the start of the season. Not publishing it in some sense
sends a weakness signal.

Also, note that (at least this version) the schedule does not prematurely
announce WTF as one of the events. Looks like they are going to wait and add
it only after he qualifies.

Looks like from the above laundry list of concerns, Roger has dealt with issues
2, 3, 4 and 7. Nothing much can be done about 1 anyway. He has a supporting family
and can afford to hire an army to help with 5.

So, the most important thing left now is issue no. 6, i.e., to bring his ranking
up so that he is at least in top 4 soon. If he can do this before Wimbledon, he probably
has a reasonable shot at Wimbledon.

Full schedule is 18 events from which the points obtained can be counted for
ranking purposes in ATP. WTF is in addition to these 18 events for ranking purposes.

Federer's schedule has 16 events (not counting WTF). This is short by 2 events of
a full schedule.

As a comparison, Nadal's schedule has 19 events (not counting WTF). This is 1 event
more than full schedule.

As another comparison, Djokovic's schedule also has exactly 16 events. However,
Djokovic does not play in any lowly ATP 250 events and so he has better shot at getting
more points than Roger. Roughly speaking, you can think of Monte Carlo ATP 1000 and
DC (possible 540) being the substitutes in Djokovic's schedule for Fed's Brisbane
and Halle, two ATP 250 events. Also, Beijing is a substitute for Rogers' Basel; but
this is an equal substitution as both are ATP 500 events.

Federer has announced that he will not play in the 1st round World Group
Davis Cup Match against Serbia. See cut and past of an article from tennis.com.
However, despite that it appears that Switzerland might win as there is speculation
that Novak might also not play in it.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Roger Federer has once again decided not to play in a World Group Davis Cup tie. The Swiss Tennis Federation announced its team that will face Serbia in Novi Sad on January 31, which includes Stanislas Wawrinka, Marco Chiudinelli, Henri Laaksonen, and Michael Lammer.

Federer has only played one Davis Cup World Group tie since 2004, but has competed in some Playoff ties to help keep Switzerland in the World Group. Switzerland has never won a Davis Cup title.

Serbia’s team will be announced on Monday and world No. 2 Novak Djokovic’s participation is also up in the air, as is that of the injured Janko Tipsarevic, who has yet to play this season.

Nole vs Stan again ??? Can't wait to see the terrible revenge of the great Serbinator..but if Stan is toot tired, maybe will he pull out ?? he certainly didn't expect to reach semi (maybe more) in AO
This DC tie seems interesting

looks like the swiss no 1 was able to talk the swiss no 2 into going for this big prize this year! :clap

Serbia's lineup consists out of amateurs, its going to be ugly. Weird though, since Novak is in Serbia at the moment.

Guess Roger decided to play 'cos he was fed up with them slating him for not playing. And it's good timing to play when his friend just won the biggest title of his career.
