I couldn't read the article (language barrier, lol) but I saw Thomas Hogstedt's name mentioned a lot. Wow!! I think this is great for Caroline. He is calm and steady and brings a lot of insight and wisdom to the game. I also believe that he will not be intimidated by Caroline's father. I believe that we will definitely see improvements in her game. :clap

Let's hope Peter Woz will step out of the way and let the new coach actually do his job.

the question is...will Piotr allow him to do on court coaching:snigger..Piotr enjoys those moments with his daughter..he gets to speak polish in his signature animated way.I dont think Thomas will like sharing the limelight with PIOTR...I just sense drama.

Yeah well - we/I have to be patient - but at least Caroline can see that her fans mean that shall have a new coach. I think they just haven't finished talking about it - but we'll see:nono

Coaches are important to a players development of their natural talent and increasing their confidence, but ultimately it is the player who must execute on court.

Many would say that Murray won his first slam, '12 US Open, because of Lendl; I would say Lendl may have given Murray a psychological boost but obviously he had the talent already (evidenced by his 3 slam final appearances before Lendl).

Maria had 3 slams, prior to her surgery and last coach, her problem was the bad serving she had developed. Once she got that under control and the "luck" of the draw (no slam winner in the final), she had the best chance to get the career slam ('12 French Open).

One must remember, that before that Kvitova ('11 Wimbledon) and Azarenka ('12 Australian Open) had defeated Maria in finals; so it was not as if Maria had totally lost her game, it was the fact players had started to figure out how to handle her.

Even, Radwanska got a good win over her in a masters' final ('12 Miami Open).

So, Serena is not Maria's only competitor on tour!

Wertheim:

I also think the specter of Williams plays no small part in this decision. Sharapova might downplay the rivalry, but she knows the deal. She knows Williams has taken up a long-term tenancy in her head. She's convinced that Williams is the one player who, in her heart of hearts, she cannot can beat. Sharapova -- to her credit -- can't abide by this and has taken a number of approaches to try to change the dynamic. She looked into breaking down Serena's game statistically. She's been both deferential and confrontational.

Connors didn't exactly shy from rivalry; this a guy who once threatened, "I'll chase that son a bitch Borg to the ends of the earth." Think he might have some ideas of how to take down Williams?

Right Chels, but everyone knows that Serena is the one that matters.

No matter who The Pova beats or loses to Serena's dominance over her

is what everyone focuses on ( except the Hype Machine of course. )

She is trying everything she can, hiring anyone she can, to get to Serena.

The Media tries to play it down and manufacture a rivalry but Maria

knows her validation lies with winning vs Ree

Does having coach after coach after coach help an individual? I personally do not believe that its the coach, it's the player.

in Caroline's case, just maybe it will improve her abilities a bit, but i cannot see it drastically helping her. as for Maria S. i refuse to believe that anything is going to help her finally defeat Serena Williams after 9 years and counting..

I find it odd too that Caroline has been able to been serena on a bad day, but not pova. interesting. Maybe Caroline is willing to actually listen to her coach, where as pova isnt.

Forget about Caroline, she's cooked. But Murray kissed a few frogs before he finally found Prince Charming...

The main reason Serena is beating Maria very consistently is because Maria doesn't have variety in her game. It's easy for a player of Serena's caliber to raise her game even if she is not clicking in all cylinders because Maria hits a very hard flat ball that doesn't move and eventually you can time and ride her pace. Plus the rest that follows:
It's very personal with Serena with Maria. Now it's ultra personal since Maria is dating Grigor who was once very close with Serena

I dont think Serena did anything with that boy Grigor...she was still heartbroken over Common.
In other news pova and Vika were hitting together....now thats a surprise.I think pova wants to steal everything from Serena...including friends.:snigger

I do not know why they insist in this a rivalry in that case then Vika and Serena also has a rivalry going, but you do not hear them calling it a rivalry. As a matter of fact, they do not even talk about it....unfrigging believable.

Exactly Sir, you did not even have to go any further after your first sentence because that says it all.

Seems to me Patrick has changed Serena's game for the better.
Coaches can be very helpful, look at Sanchez and Li.

Changing 3 coaches in a year is not good but Bartoli did it and won Wimby!
Go figure!!

RE: Maria has split from her coach

First of all this is Serena's second coach in her what...18yrs of playing! and her parents is still a part of her coaching team. As you notice because of Serena's superior tennis acumen she would be successful with any coach she's not just a ball basher like the others. Also, the other players who have change coaches has not had the success that Serena has had and that is because they have a very low tennis I.Q.

since this thread has for a while now developed into a broader discussion on the top players' coaches, i thought changing the title was adequate, as to let people know what's going on inside.

removing "Maria" in the title of this thread makes it a dead thread.
