Point taken Connor's didnt help Roddick's game
I too can see personality clashes.
I have been reading on other tennis sites people dont see this new pairing lasting long at all.

I also read that Connor's briefly worked with Sharapova before the AO 2008

I just saw the mention on Tennis Channel, and they said that Connors helped Roddick get his USO title. Not sure if that's true, but, if so, it would be wrong to say that he didn't help Roddick.

That said, I would also say this is probably a short-term agreement, and that they wouldn't make it over the long-term. But Connors is more of a "drop-in doctor" than a full-time coach, right? I'm guessing this is an interim "shot-in-the-arm" for Maria, before she looks for longer-term guidance.

How could Jimbo have helped Roddick get his USO? That was in 2003 under Gilbert's watch. Connors didn't come onboard to several years later. I think Andy did get to a USO final under Jimbo only to lose to Fed again, I'm fairly certain.

Yep, Roddick lost to Roger in the '06 USO final, and Connors was his coach during that period. It's really sloppy of the Tennis Channel to get this stuff wrong.

As for Connors and Sharapova, why not, no? If it works, it works; if it doesn't, what was the harm? I'm guessing everyone will know pretty quickly whether or not it's going to work, anyway, so this could very well seemingly be over before it's even begun.

The only question mark I have is they seem like polar opposites personality wise. He has a huge ego which might be tough to take out of the equation. We will have to see where this partnership goes. I thought she would have gone with someone who would help her with her serving as that really is where her problem lies when she loses. Her ground game is fairly consistent, so not sure what Connors can do there aside get her to mix up the pace a bit more.

Connors, I didn't see this one coming.. Its gonna be a fun year with these two.:clap
two egos...just cannot see Connors in a sub-serviant position or running down to do on court coaching.I wonder how ChrisEvert will feel about this appointment since Connors outed her and put her business out there..:snigger
I dont see this pairing succeeding...maybe a regression.

Lots of stuff there to digest Tossip.. I guess you liked my post..

Very surprised by this hookup and will be even more surprised if it lasts long term. Maria has admitted in the past she's not easy to coach and Jimmy has a giant ego.

I don't believe it will last long term. As someone else mentioned Jimbo is not the kind of person who will come down on court to give Maria coaching during the regular tour events or do the extensive traveling week-to-week. If anything, I could see him helping her get ready for USO and possibly AO as a sort of trial run.

I understand what you're saying, but, if I'm paying you to coach me, you're going to come down to that court if I feel I need you.

Maria is the boss and Connors is the employee.

^ nah, i'd say Maria is the customer and Connors is the service provider. and since he's pretty much set financially, i'll assume that they will have a contract that tries to broker their needs. if Maria needs/wants a coach who's available to her 24/7, she'll find someone else.

I wonder if Michael Joyce will come back as part of her entourage.

I doubt it after he blabbed that her father commented that she'd never win a slam if Serena was in it. I suspect you only reveal that type of information if you feel a person is no longer your friend/your relationship at the closest level is done.

I think you are likely right in your assessment. Maria needs to listen and follow the advice of someone who, unlike the millions who have played the game, deservedly has some ego since he could walk the talk.

It will be difficult for pova because Connors wife will be like a helicopter wife, she might feel threatened and pova might feel threatened that Connors wife might go after Grigor since he likes cougars..the dynamics are a recipe for disaster..

Seriously?

She's paying him to supply a service, meaning, she's the boss.

As far as him be set financially, one definitely could argue, she has more money to burn, FAR more. And if I'm correct, in his book he states he gambled a lot, so his money may not be that long or long as we think.

yes, "seriously".
if you pay a gardener to mow your lawn, you might be the boss. if you pay stella mccartney to design a dress, things might be different. and if you pay your lawyer because you're in trouble, you better sit down and listen to what he says.

look, what i'm saying is that his well-being doesn't depend on this job. it doesn't matter who has more money, it's about whether Jimmy needs the job real badly. i reckon they both don't /need/ this, they have alternatives, but they want to give this one a try. Maria will say what she needs, wants and expects, and Jimmy will say what he can offer. they're two professionals who brokered a deal to work together, to get the best possible outcome. to think that Maria's the boss and just because she says so, he'll have to sit in her box in the first round of the Dagestan Community Center Invitational just because she says so is a bit simple, no?

but don't worry, i'm sure that time and travel commitment have been agreed upon just like other details in such a contract.
