I'm with others. If you lose a grip on the racket during the point and it hits someone I'd call it an accident. I've seen players when they throw the racket towards the ball when they are defeated in a point, but that is more like a crowd pleaser so in case they hit someone like that I would give them a pass, but could they also get DQ? What Novak did was bad temper after the point, so he got DQ.

I don't know about this womens doubles case, haven't seen it.
The women double match occurred at RG..it was afterwards the point and one of the ladies hit the ball carelessly out of play but hit the ball afterwards

Now you got me interested.

I found a video.

It doesn't look like she hit the ball in anger at all. According to comments below, umpire initially gave her a warning, but it was the opponents who pushed for a DQ.

Correct Don it was their opponents who pushed for the DQ which I thought was totally unfair.

I know. I was thinking out loudly and wrote how it looked to me this DQ.

Meanwhile Monfils is through against De Minaur. He deserves a centre court next round, he is still fun, gets to play Novak or Fokina.

They're dropping like flies as predicted; Ruud & Rune! I'd be more afraid of Novak's effort against Fokina except he's due to blow a tire as well! ;)

Rune retires down a set and break to McDonald 64 20 RET
Holger had the trainer out, having back spasms
Seeing the USO is just around the corner, wise decision

Back spasms don't heal fast I don't care how what age a player is. I hope Holger heals quickly

This is similar to what Novak did: it wasn’t intentional or hit in anger, but not paying close enough attention to the environment before hitting the ball.

Wow, I am really hoping Rune is okay! Back spasms are not a joke even if you are a young player. Also, everyone has said that having an injury right before a slam is worrisome.

You can hear the umpire clearly say, "It doesn't matter if you didn't mean it, you're responsible" for what happened. Somebody got hurt. Which answers @Fiero425 still moaning that Djokovic didn't hit the ball that hard. I don't agree with AP that it's wrong of the opponents to push for the DQ. The rule has to be applied equally. To the original question, when the ball is in play, accidents can happen, including bad ones. Though, if you can't win the point by throwing your racquet at it, it might be considered reckless behavior? Maybe depending on how serious the injury? But I still think that when the ball is in play, people are going to hit by it, and by racquets. It's the snarky swatting away of the ball, or throwing the errant racquet that gets you in trouble.

ADF taking a medical time after only 7 games.
Umpire mentioned his back. Not great for my upset hopes here. Novak serve was pickable up to now, but not if Foki is not fit.

This doesn't look like the match will finish. Too bad, because Novak is looking pickable.

So pickable that he can’t beat a guy who’s trying to lose.

EDIT: I thought DF was going to retire, but he’s still playing.

EDIT: DF retires.

This is bad form. Umpiring is left to the officials. The players job is to play. Everyone should stay in their lane.
