As long as he returns well he doesn't lose. They should just work on that shit the next week, return aggressively nonstop. It lifts his whole game. Fed is looking OK though his backhand hasn't really clicked much yet. I like that he is being really aggressive even with a few misses.

Anyone know what Fed was complaining to the chair ump about? Love the tears from Moxie. Let me guess, this is on par with being diva enough to ban an ump from Nad's matches?
Right..."nothing to see here" if Roger does it. And far from the first time.

Depends on what it was about? I've seen Rafa and pretty much every player get pissed at the chair ump over certain things, sometimes it is justified and sometimes it isn't.

JMDP lost his advantage in the TB. Let's go 3. Venga.

Goffin is impressive to watch in person. I figured DP would overpower him and win fairly easily but Goffin more than held his own. He dominated the rallies most of the match. Should've been over quicker in the 2nd but he had some tough luck the game he was broken. Some drunk idiot was heckling him before a second serve and predictably he DF'ed and then he had a late footfault called on what would've been an ace. Roger will have to be sharp or it could get interesting.

Where did you guys watch the rest of the match? They were showing boxing on ESPN2 after play was suspended.

I watched on a stream that I found on livescorehunter.com...it was in Spanish.

It seemed to be about nothing more than he played a crappy TB and was in a foul mood. I don't want to get in a fight over this, but you're fine to chill when it's Roger. You also throw around misleading words, like "ban." Rafa asked for a time-out from Bernardes, just between the two of them. He wasn't banned in any way, and never stopped umpiring matches at the top level. Don't give me shit for pointing it out. You would have, and you do all the time, so I'm just being you. B-)

Goffin is a little hard to figure out, given his smaller stature. Thanks for the report from the front. Is he like a Davydenko? What impresses about him?

I see Djokovic was in Finals 5 times. Amazing, and he never won.

Let me translate: "time out" ----- temporary ban from Nadal's matches. :lol3:

I was only able to watch from 5-4 in the second, but from what I saw Federer was playing really well. There were a lot of great rallies from both players. With Djokovic, Federer, Nadal and now Wawrinka it goes to show you that we often deem players done too early. I admit to being guilty about Wawrinka and at some point Nadal. I think this was the best Federer has played since Shanghai and Basel last year. He has had some good spurts at Wimbledon and Aussie Open this year, but not consistently. I actually feel that this US Open is close to being more open than last years. Who knows what Federer will show up, Djokovic has looked very shaky since Wimbledon and Nadal has never defended a title off clay. However, I feel that Nadal's form might be the best. Strangely in a reverse of the usual ough I feel that Federer will beat him if they play. The problem is that they might not play. I hope Federer can even the series with Djokovic here at 23-23. There last match was that hideous Aussie Open 2016 semifinal. Those first two sets might have been the best tennis I have ever seen. He still has a way to go to get back to it and these courts are hopefully too fast for him.

Grumpy Fed telling off the chair umpire. #nosaint
He was 100% right. Umpire counted wrong the score, took away a point from Federer.

A Wawrinka's crosscourt was out at 30-0. The umpire missed the out call by the lineswoman, counted 40-0, Wawrinka won the next point and the umpire closed the game, when in fact it was 40-15.

I was just going to explain this when I saw this post. 100% correct. The lineswoman clearly called it out, and motioned it out, but the umpire totally ignored it. Did not say a word either. Roger was thinking the score is 40-15 and he calls game ! Roger had every right to bitch there.

I think that happened right before I started watching live. We never get the night sessions when we go there, just grounds passes which give us main stadium during the day session and everything else for the whole day's play. Some old lady gave us her tickets after the first set and they were really good seats, closest I will ever be for a Federer match I'm sure. He looked good aside from the ROS in set 2 and then he turned it up another notch in the third. Hopefully he can keep it up.

But I saw Federer giving the chair ump the business and was wondering what it was about.

That would be the biggest mistake by an umpire I've even heard of. Did he correct himself? If not, Fed was in position of calling the tour director, and after briefing the lineswoman the umpire ignored, the director should overrule the mistake. And then ATP should fire the umpire from the tour so that we don't see such pathetic mistakes anymore.

From what I saw on TV, it looked like the umpire overruled the lineswoman's call in his own head ! My mistake if he clarified it at some point in that game . I did not see or hear it. What I clearly heard and saw was that the ball was called out.

Here is a video of it. The ball landed right under the chair and he saw it in, clearly. Didn't hear the call, but I guess he would have overruled it, then. I thought it looked in.

Bottom line is he screwed up, he's got to be aware of the out call and frankly if there was a dispute, as there obviously was, they should be able to go back and see if the ball was in or not, even after the game had ended. Can't blame Roger for being ticked off at that.

You continue to defend that and it's ridiculous IMO. You defended Nadal when he took a bathroom break before Roger served for the match at IW 2012 as well. I think you'd defend him if he drowned a bunch of puppies at this point.
