gael is not fit enough..stalling by messing around with his laces. heaving in air trying to recover.

I can't remember, did Monfils seem any fitter when Rasheed was coaching him? I don't think he did.
Monfils frequently looks exhausted after a couple of sets.
He has the weapons to end points quicker, so his exhaustion is partially avoidable, but he pushes too much.

fed is struggling to hold almost every game. This is new. He used to struggle only to convert
a break before (after declining).

Federer's fitness is best on tour, he could go far at the US Open regardless of his errors, because he is The Fitness Express.

If Gael can keep his head , he can pull this off like JowillieTs did. I like the way Monfils is playing this fast

ooooooooooooooohh the fedster is not amused.

Speaking of amusement and Federer, I've always wondered why such a relaxed player (or seemingly relaxed) does not smile more on court. Federer virtually never smiles on court no matter what, and doesn't react to anything with amusement. I would have thought such an instinctual player (or maybe he isn't) would not need to keep a stern demeanor. Wouldn't Federer be able to play his best tennis without being serious?
