I missed today's games. I see Shakh is bringing it home

I'm still trying to figure out why the hell he couldn't play g5 at move 20. There has to be some basic tactic I'm missing. Obviously it'd open up Black's position but he seems to have enough resources against an attack unless there is an immediate shot that I'm missing and Stockfish is never wrong so I'm missing it.

Shakh has White against Carlsen and is only .5 points up, and remember that Carlsen is white vs Nico. I say chances are they tie for first.

According to the engines the best move was Qf6, but let's see...

20, ....g5
21, Nxe4, dxe4
22, Rd1, Qf6
23, Rxd7

doesn't look good for black at all right?

I underestimated how much of a problem Rd1 would cause. Main issue is he can't play Qe6 due to Bb3. Also I was thinking 22. Qe7, Ng6 Qg7, Nxf8, Rxf8 but I guess the bishops wreak too much havoc there.

agreed. In fact I would go as far as to say that dark square bishop would be as mighty as blacks rook

Shakh-Carlsen has some serious potential. Even with the two bishops in an open position I wouldn't enjoy being black right now.

Both remaining games are on move 26 and Svidler-Navarra blitzed out a 40 move draw that ended half an hour ago.

Qf8 from Carlsen. I thought Bf8 looked a little better, either way I'd say white has an edge here.

Carlsen is moving too fast. 35. Rd6 looks very strong for white now

Wow shocking from Shakh, he was not going to have any trouble making time control. Trades a pawns and queens and now it's an easy draw...wow. Kind of a bail out there, Carlsen deserves respect but I don't know how you're not playing for a win in that position.

Shakh has been able to put more pressure than I figured after the exchange of queens.

Wow, Shakh won that. Talk about giving Magnus a taste of his own medicine, that's the type of grind he usually pulls off vs his opponents. He has won the tournament with a round to spare.

Magnus is only 13 points ahead of Caruana and 17 ahead of Shakh. This is probably the closest it's been in awhile.

Impressive win by Shakh today. Normally he gets frazzled against Magnus. I think Caruana has been closer to Magnus before. What an odd tournament for Magnus. Normally he starts off slowly and finishes well. Quite the opposite

Great win today by MVL. Other two games were a bore even though Carlsen won. Pretty uninspiring play and he just waited for Nico to hang himself.

I was tempted to put this in the joke section, but it's too specialised for that. Enjoy....

Can you enlarge it for me please? I can only see to read the 1st 2 lines clearly & I'm wearing my spectacles.
