Yeah the top humans no longer have a chance against computers. It'd be a major success for them just to draw.

Nakamura had an interesting match against a computer a year ago or more. I think they played 4 games, two were at a pawn disadvantage for the program, one the program was an exchange down, and one Naka started with a crazy lead in development, I think Naka went 1-2-1 or something.

I just checked and it was actually 3 draws and 1 loss. The loss, not surprisingly, was game 4 where the only edge was major development. Against a computer the top humans need material advantage over development.

Interesting... does that totally destroy online matches? Couldn't an opponent just run the moves through a computer?

no doubt about it, h5 got Fabi out of prep. On chess24 Grischuk is slating Fabi's seconds for not doing thorough prep on this variation

There are many cheaters online. Most are obvious but more and more there are "smart users" where they use it for some moves, some games, etc. the site I play on, chess.com, gives me rating adjustments for games lost to programs. Some of them I know it's coming, and others I think "that guy was using?"

this is shaping up to be another corker. I don't want to hear any complaints about draws. These games have been so compelling!

It's been tremendous. Unfortunately it might come down to a mismatch in TB's. But credit to both these guys for being so tough to beat.

I'd imagine the progs are calling this fairly even but as a human player I'd prefer white. Black has more ways to go wrong.

Though with that said black will look good if he can get e4 in and land his knight on e5 soon

engines are saying this is slowly moving in blacks favour which makes sense to me as Magnus seems to be slowly grabbing space in the centre. And Fabi just played f4... engines didn't really like it

I like Caruana's aggression but this isn't looking promising. Slowly getting to the point where there are only two outcomes, draw and loss. f4 is aggressive but creates long term weaknesses.

Magnus wasting no time today. Be8 threatens a cheap shot on a4

Yup. Magnus is starting to look better and better, and watch out for Fabi's time as well

Re1? Must be preparing Nd1 and Nc3. Takes a lot of time but that's got to be a move Magnus didn't see coming.

g6 will be played by black at some point. Ra8 is a quiet and awkward looking move but kind of puts serious pressure on white as a3 is tough to stop long term

Marches back to rd1, interesting and maybe buying time. Eventually the knight goes to h3 and g5 as before. Was just wondering if he was considering Nd1 and Nc3

If white does play Qa3 his queen is very poorly placed and that was my thinking on Ra8
